        by Nina Bußmann

        by Jeana Altbuch

Animal Welfare in a Changing World

        by Edited by Andrew Butterworth

Contemporary and challenging, this thought-provoking book outlines a number of the key dilemmas in animal welfare for today's, and tomorrow's, world. The issues discussed range from the welfare of hunted animals, to debates around intensive farming versus sustainability, and the effects of climate and environmental change. The book explores the effects of fences on wild animals and human impacts on carrion animals; the impacts of tourism on animal welfare; philosophical questions about speciesism; and the quality and quantity of animal lives. The welfare impacts of human-animal interactions are explored, including human impacts on marine mammals, fish, wildlife, and companion and farm animals. Animal Welfare in a Changing World provides: Concise, opinion-based views on important issues in animal welfare by world experts and key opinion leaders. Pieces based on experience, which balance evidence-based approaches and the welfare impacts of direct engagement through training, campaigning and education. A wide-ranging collection of examples and descriptions of animal welfare topics which outline dilemmas in the real world, that are sometimes challenging, and not always comfortable reading. This is a 'must-read' book for animal and veterinary scientists, ethologists, policy and opinion leaders, NGOs, conservation biologists and anyone who feels passionately about the welfare of animals

      • Hilma af Klint - Maps of Invisibility

        by Ylva Hillström

Maps of Invisibility is the very first children’s book about the artist Hilma af Klint and her work. It is a book not only about art, but also about magic, mysticism and scientific discoveries. Moreover, it is a story about a woman who was left out of art history books for a long time, despite creating her abstract images long before anyone else. Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) began painting her non-descriptive and very symbolic images as early as 1906. That was years before Kandinsky and Malevitj arrived at what is generally regarded as the birth of modern abstract art. She was heavily influenced by spiritual ideologies and claimed that she painted on instruction from the spirit world, for the future. The interest in Hilma af Klint has grown massively during the past few years. Her work will be displayed in exhibitions and museums all over the world during many years to come. The exhibition of her art at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 2019 attracted more visitors than they had ever had and the exhibition catalogue became their bestselling one to date. The book is highly illustrated with both quality reproductions of Hilma af Klint’s work and with illustrations drawn by Karin Eklund. 7 years +

The Little Book of Loony Sex Laws

        by Christine Green

A little book that takes a quirky look at the world of sex and finds that, universally, the law is an ass! The Little Book of Loony Sex Laws reveals over 250 loony sex laws and rules - some current, some ancient. Did you know that in the USA in Virginia in the county of Norfolk a law was passed banning women from wearing corsets. The reason being was because 'the privilege of admiring the curvaceous unencumbered body of a young woman should not be denied to the normal red-blooded American male'. And in Ohio, Cleveland, women aren't allowed to wear patent leather shoes for fear a man might see the reflection of something that he ought not to! In China thare is no law against prostitution because according to the authorities: "There is no prostitution in China. However, we do have some women who make love for money." In England...no sex is allowed on the back of a motorbike in the city of London! And finally from Greece...the ancient Greeks knew how to deal with adulterous men. A law was written that if caught in the act they would have their pubic hair removed and a large radish inserted up their rectum. Ther is no record af any repeal of this law!;The perfect antidote to our oversexed world, The Little Book of Loony Sex Laws is a must for Father's Day!

Kurzinformation ISBN 978-3-9525331-3-0 Titel “Cara o Sello”. Mario Salazar Montero. Mario Salazar Montero. Geboren in Kolumbien, Südamerika. Lebt seit vielen Jahren in der Schweiz. Staffing Standards for Aviation Safety Inspectors

by Committee on Federal Aviation Administration Aviation Safety Inspector Staffing Standards, William C. Howell and Susan B. Van Hemel, Editors, National Research Council

A primary mission of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the assurance of safety in civil aviation, both private and commercial. To accomplish this mission, the FAA has promulgated a large number of regulations and has established a major division, the Office of Aviation Safety, to enforce and maintain the regulations and effectively promote safety in aviation. Within the office there are several subordinate organizations. Staffing Standards for Aviation Safety Inspectors is concerned with two of them: the Flight Standards Service (called AFS), charged with overseeing aviation operations and maintenance, as well as other programs, and the Aircraft Certification Service (AIR), charged with ensuring the safety of aircraft through regulation and oversight of their design and manufacture. The objective of the study is to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the methods and models that the FAA now uses in developing staffing standards and projections of staffing needs for ASIs and to advise the FAA on potential improvements. Staffing Standards for Aviation Safety Inspectors is organized in an Executive Summary and five chapters. This first chapter provides the background of the study and explains the committee's approach to its task. Chapter 2 discusses modeling and its applicability to the development of staffing standards for such organizations as the Flight Standards Service and the Aircraft Certification Service. Chapter 3 traces the recent history of staffing standards in these organizations and considers manpower and staffing models and methods used by other organizations. Chapter 4 examines factors to be considered in the development of ASI staffing standards and the challenges faced by any methodology applied to this task. Chapter 5 presents the committee's findings and recommendations, including a discussion of issues and constraints that must be considered in weighing the implementation of alternative approaches.

Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft

by Committee to Evaluate the Potential Exposure to Agent Orange/TCDD Residue and Level of Risk of Adverse Health Effects for Aircrew of Post-Vietnam C-123 Aircraft; Board on the Health of Select Populations; Institute of Medicine

From 1972 to 1982, approximately 1,500-2,100 US Air Force Reserve personnel trained and worked on C-123 aircraft that had formerly been used to spray herbicides in Vietnam as part of Operation Ranch Hand. After becoming aware that some of the aircraft on which they had worked had previously served this purpose, some of these AF Reservists applied to the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) for compensatory coverage under the Agent Orange Act of 1991. The Act provides health care and disability coverage for health conditions that have been deemed presumptively service-related for herbicide exposure during the Vietnam War. The VA denied the applications on the basis that these veterans were ineligible because as non-Vietnam-era veterans or as Vietnam-era veterans without "boots on the ground" service in Vietnam, they were not covered. However, with the knowledge that some air and wipe samples taken between 1979 and 2009 from some of the C-123s used in Operation Ranch Hand showed the presence of agent orange residues, representatives of the C-123 Veterans Association began a concerted effort to reverse VA's position and obtain coverage. At the request of the VA, Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure in Agent Orange-Contaminated C-123 Aircraft evaluates whether or not service in these C-123s could have plausibly resulted in exposures detrimental to the health of these Air Force Reservists. The Institute of Medicine assembled an expert committee to address this question qualitatively, but in a scientific and evidence-based fashion. This report evaluates the reliability of the available information for establishing exposure and addresses and places in context whether any documented residues represent potentially harmful exposure by characterizing the amounts available and the degree to which absorption might be expected. Post-Vietnam Dioxin Exposure rejects the idea that the dioxin residues detected on interior surfaces of the C-123s were immobile and effectively inaccessible to the Reservists as a source of exposure. Accordingly, this report states with confidence that the Air Force Reservists were exposed when working in the Operation Ranch Hand C-123s and so experienced some increase in their risk of a variety of adverse responses.

        Mycotoxins

A Managemental Guide for Animal Husbandry

by P. Tensingh Gnanraj, L. Radhakrishnan, Ghadevaru Sarathchandra & A. Ruba Nanthin

Animal protein sources such as meat, egg and milk are complete proteins as they provide all essential amino acids in highest quality. To provide high quality protein to humans, livestock have to be fed with toxin free quality feedstuffs. Animal feed plays a major role in the global food industry, as it has highest returns to the producer throughout the world. Animal feeds are produced either by livestock farmers themselves locally or feed manufacturing companies. Feeds produced have to be secured and stored in a proper manner to avoid microbial as well as any other biotic agents. Mycotoxins are such naturally occurring toxin produced by the fungal growth. The molds can grow in any of the feed stuffs like maize, other cereals, Groundnut cake and other oil cakes in warm humid climatic conditions. Mycotoxins can have variety of serious health hazards ranging from mild irritation to deadly cancers in livestock and humans. Addressing the issues related to mycotoxin is the need of the hour. With globalisation of the feed industry and rapid climatic changes, it is very difficult to enumerate the occurrence and presence of the toxin in the feedstuff. These unnoticeable toxin effects may have direct and indirect impact on animal production system. It is very essential to have adequate knowledge about the metabolism, growth and reproduction of various mycotoxins and the toxicological properties of their intermediate products produced during metabolism to neutralize these toxins.
