        Against All Odds

        The Magnificent Trio That Built the Israeli Air Force

        by Hugo N. Gerstl

        1947 – The UN declares that the British Mandate over Palestine will come to an end. In May 1948 Israel and Arab Palestine will be divided into two independent states. The Arab world reacts immediately: There will be no Jewish state; it will be driven into the sea! Sixty-five million Arabs against six hundred thousand Israeli Jews. Britain has washed its hands of the problem. The United States, under the guise of the Neutrality Act, makes it a felony for any American to supply side with any arms. Americans Al Schwimmer, Hank Greenspun, and Charlie Winters boldly defy the Neutrality Act and risk convictions by purchasing twenty-three former Nazi Messerschmitt Bf-109s in Czechoslovakia, painting out the swastikas on the tails with Jewish stars of David, and smuggling them to Israel; founding a “Panamanian” airline and flying seven large aircraft out of Panama “to do an aerial survey,” but never returning; securing a huge cache of ammunition from a sympathetic junk dealer in Hawaii; smuggling weapons to Mexico on a hijacked yacht, and ultimately shipping them “to Nationalist China” – via Israel. Stripped of most of their rights as US citizens, Schwimmer is recruited to start a small aircraft maintenance plant in Israel, which will become Israel Aircraft Industries, a billion-dollar-a-year operation; Greenspun purchases a defunct newspaper, which he turns into the and is among the first to call witch-hunting Senator Joseph McCarthy to account; Winters returns to importing and exporting fruit and diamonds between Israel and the United States. After the 1967 Six-Day War, when France reneges on its commitment to sell Israel fifty advanced fighter jets, the trio manages to “steal” plans from a friendly engineer in Geneva. Within six months Israel turns out its own homegrown Mach 2 fighter aircraft. And that’s just the beginning. International best-selling author has crafted a tantalizing, rewarding, magnificently readable tour de force based on the true life stories of three of Israel’s most unheralded heroes, cementing and enhancing his reputation as a master storyteller.  Published By Pangæa Publishing Group, 2019. 560 pages – 23 cm x 15 cm , 489 Pages.

        Nautical Tourism

        by Edited by Tihomir Lukovic

        Nautical tourism encompasses aspects of marine tourism such as sailing, yachting, cruising and diving, as well as harbour-side developments, coastal water sports such as jet skiing, boat shows, port tours, and marine heritage destinations. This book provides a timely analysis of nautical tourism in Europe, examining the provision and expansion of nautical tourism in economies at different stages of development. The book also covers nautical tourism in The Pacific, providing an analysis of two very different markets, and addresses the perceived North American take-over of cruising in Europe to provide insight into the global issues affecting nautical tourism. The book covers matters of current concern such as the role of nautical tourism in economic growth, sustainable development, international policy, consumer demand and the world market, development strategies, arctic tourism and the future potential of nautical tourism. Written by an international team of contributors the book also includes fascinating case studies to further explain and explore current concepts in nautical tourism.

        Cultures and caricatures of British imperial aviation

        Passengers, pilots, publicity

        by Gordon Pirie, Andrew Thompson, John Mackenzie

        The new activity of trans-continental civil flying in the 1930s is a useful vantage point for viewing the extension of British imperial attitudes and practices. Cultures and caricatures of British imperial aviation examines the experiences of those (mostly men) who flew solo or with a companion (racing or for leisure), who were airline passengers (doing colonial administration, business or research), or who flew as civilian air and ground crews. For airborne elites, flying was a modern and often enviable way of managing, using and experiencing empire. On the ground, aviation was a device for asserting old empire: adventure and modernity were accompanied by supremacism. At the time, however, British civil imperial flying was presented romantically in books, magazines and exhibitions. Eighty years on, imperial flying is still remembered, reproduced and re-enacted in caricature. ;

        Off-Road with Clarkson, Hammond & May

        Behind the Scenes of Their 'Rock and Roll' World Tour

        by Phillipa Sage

        For over 12 years Phillipa Sage worked alongside Clarkson, Hammond and May as their PA, gofer, and fixer where she saw the boys at their best and, hilariously, at their worst. A closet petrol head, Phillipa started working in the motor industry on live events over 20 years ago and first worked with Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman (formerly Top Gear and now the Grand Tour’s Executive Producer) in 1997.  She proved to be a loyal, trusted friend and colleague to all the presenters—from back in the beginning with Tiff Needell and Quentin Wilson—to the now infamous trio of Clarkson, Hammond and May, and became a key member of what became known as ‘The Bubble’, the exclusive, dysfunctional working family that toured the world.  With an enormous budget, they travelled like rock stars—with super cars, yachts, private jets, helicopters, and five-star wining and dining—taking their unique brand of motoring madness to 18 countries, 31 cities and to over 2 million fans in arenas and at festivals from New Zealand to Norway. Supported by a large crew and their personal entourage, Clarkson, Hammond and May, when not performing in their extraordinary, high octane, live action, motoring theatre, indulged in extravagant holidays. They and their ‘Bubble’ family relaxed in luxury resorts or private houses entertaining themselves with pool parties, drinking, heli-sightseeing, drinking, private motorboat cruises, drinking, jet skiing, sailing, drinking and eating, and drinking. In Off-Road with Clarkson, Hammond & May, Phillipa shares the tour highs, lows and laughter of three incredibly talented, stupid and naughty boys.

        by Peter Walther

        Berlin in 1930 is the glittering metropolis of the new Europe, faster and freer than the continent’s other capitals. Nowhere else do wastefulness and misery live in such close proximity. Maud von Ossietzky, worried about her husband Carl, increasingly turns to alcohol for comfort, and Ernst Thälmann, chair of the Communist party, finds solace in his lovers. Heinrich Brüning, still chancellor of the German Reich, plays a board game with his goddaughter on the evening of his dismissal. In the end, it all comes down to one question: will there be a »Third Reich«? Featuring trenchant, powerful portraits of figures such as Heinrich Brüning, Erik Jan Hanussen, Maud von Ossietzsky, Ernst Thälmann and Dorothy Thompson.
