        The Merchant of Bullshit

        by J.D.B.

A rotting gene has infiltrated mankind’s cognitive process at an advanced level and turned it into gibberish.  Moreover, the Dronzyme, an integral part of the Detox Unorthodox advocated by major forces in the Consultancy Sector, actively stimulates the production of this gene via a benign mucous in the larynx. Soon, under the auspices of the Catallus Group, a new language and functionality possesses the mindset, and no one is considered immune. The Capital itself becomes a repository for degenerate ideas and concepts, whose terror becomes flesh with the birth of a quasi-physical oaf. Herein is the awful truth of the Schnimp, and the Corporate Giants now forced to obey its commands... in a unprecedented wave of NONSENSE. The explanation: The Merchant of Bullshit is a satire on the City of London, and its all-pervading, meaningless jargon, part of the global war against intelligence, as documented by someone who worked nights for over 15 years immersed in it. The author: (location unknown) lives in a shed in Myrddin’s Precinct where he communes with drunken spirits and entities, and launches vitriolic assaults against the Satanic Inertias of the Capital, soon to be revisited in The Gnat.  A series of endless night-shifts in the Ancient City of London drives him to the terrifying conclusion that its entire existence is a Hoax – a bankrupt Government, media and economy imprisoned in a Tower of Babble.  But can a man certified as insane – twice – complete his mission to rescue the intellectual heritage of his Nation?  Who knows.  For now, he sleeps amid the empty quarts and flasks, waiting to spring forth from his chrysalis...

        Community Ecology of Tropical Birds

        by C. Sivaperruman & E.A.Jayson

Community Ecology of Tropical Birds, the tropical ecosystems is one of the most biological diverse habitats on the earth. Seventy six per cent of all centers of avian endemism occur in tropical regions and the same is true for many plant and animal communities. Birds are important component of biological diversity and their ecological, cultural, recreational and economic benefits are recognized universally. They act as vital links in many food webs and often serve as highly visible biological indicators of ecosystem health. Many bird populations are declining all over the world due to habitat loss and fragmentation, predation, pesticide use, invasive exotic species and other factors. This book is about the ecology of tropical bird community, all together 12 chapters are described and divided into two parts. The first part of this book looks at the forest bird community including status and distribution, species-abundance relationship, seasonal changes, vertical distribution and habitat utilisation. The second part provides detailed ecology of wetland bird community. This book will be an invaluable resource for field scientist, researchers, students, and naturalists in the field of Ornithology.

        Spatialities

The Geographies of Art and Architecture

        by Rugg, Judith

Spatialities draws on a distinguished panel of artists, cultural theorists, architects, and geographers to offer a nuanced conceptual framework for understanding the ever-evolving spatial orderings that materially constitute our world. With chapters covering a wide range of topics, including the interstitial, the liminal and relational processes of deformation, and distribution and stratification as a means of spatial reflection, this volume shows space to be less a defining category and more an abstract terrain whose boundaries may be continually deconstructed and reassembled.

        Global Metabolic Profiling: Clinical Applications

by Ian D Wilson, Georgios Theodoridis, Andrew Nicholls

The aim of many current global metabolic profiling studies is to discover and apply new metabolic biomarkers. These may be indicative of the mechanisms of disease or the propensity for it to develop, or may enable diagnosis, patient stratification, and prediction/monitoring of response to therapy. The use of global metabolic profiling in the clinic in the future seems assured, and it seems likely that future application will include novel innovations that will put metabolic profiling into the doctor’s consulting room or even into the hands of the surgeon in the operating theatre. The twelve chapters of this timely book provide a snapshot of the current state of the art in metabolic profiling in the clinic.

        A PODOMANCY MANUAL

        by DELLA BIANCA LUCA

A podomancy manuale. As ancient as the ancient civilizations, Solestry or foot-reading has developed, a bit under-stream, through the centuries, in the shadow of the most famous divinations such as the sisterly palmistry, perhaps because our extremities have often been a source of shame, contempt for their proximity to the villainous land and then, in the end, to become the subject of secret, sinful, fetish desire. The art of reading the foot has been disseminated from ancient Babylon, India, China, driven by the desire, something which man has always held, to understand the secrets of the soul and to anticipate the surprises of fate. It has been fragmented and mixed with reflexotherapymedicines and has reached us rich in stratification and contamination. This streamlined manual, enriched by the author's illustrations, offers readers an original inspiration to begin personal search of the secret correspondence between lines, wrinkles, calluses, shapes of our belovedhated extremities and psychological   features, perhaps even catching a bit of a glow of the future.

        Prospects of Higher Education

Globalization, Market Competition, Public Goods and the Future of the University

        by Marginson, S.

As common global problems accumulate, research and higher education become ever more vital. At the same time global convergence is transforming the prospects of higher education institutions. Local and national affairs are no longer the ultimate horizon, creating much scope for cross-border initiative and invention in both knowledge and university strategy. Yet the new freedoms are not experienced equally in all localities. Differences between nations are still determining. As the older barriers are stripped away this enhances the capacity of strong universities and systems to dominate the rest, though new players are emerging. There are many possible trajectories for the university. The future is open and the 22 authors in Prospects of higher education explore it from three perspectives: the world as a whole, the Americas, and particular localities and regions. Moving beyond nation-centered analysis of states and markets, Prospects uses concepts of public and private goods to map the potentials for global trade and university rankings, common knowledge benefits and multilateral policy action, national stratification and the wash-back effects in systems and institutions. Broad and imaginative, methodologically innovative and policy sharp, this book has much for government and university leaders, scholars of higher education and anyone interested in public policy.

Governance and Opportunity in Metropolitan America

by Alan Altshuler, William Morrill, Harold Wolman, and Faith Mitchell, Editors; Committee on Improving the Future of U.S. Cities Through Improved Metropolitan Area Governance, National Research Council

America's cities have symbolized the nation's prosperity, dynamism, and innovation. Even with the trend toward suburbanization, many central cities attract substantial new investment and employment. Within this profile of health, however, many urban areas are beset by problems of economic disparity, physical deterioration, and social distress. This volume addresses the condition of the city from the perspective of the larger metropolitan region. It offers important, thought-provoking perspectives on the structure of metropolitan-level decisionmaking, the disadvantages faced by cities and city residents, and expanding economic opportunity to all residents in a metropolitan area. The book provides data, real-world examples, and analyses in key areas: Distribution of metropolitan populations and what this means for city dwellers, suburbanites, whites, and minorities. How quality of life depends on the spatial structure of a community and how problems are based on inequalities in spatial opportunity--with a focus on the relationship between taxes and services. The role of the central city today, the rationale for revitalizing central cities, and city-suburban interdependence. The book includes papers that provide in-depth examinations of zoning policy in relation to patterns of suburban development; regionalism in transportation and air quality; the geography of economic and social opportunity; social stratification in metropolitan areas; and fiscal and service disparities within metropolitan areas.

        America Becoming

Racial Trends and Their Consequences, Volume 1

by Neil J. Smelser, William Julius Wilson, and Faith Mitchell, Editors; National Research Council

The 20th Century has been marked by enormous change in terms of how we define race. In large part, we have thrown out the antiquated notions of the 1800s, giving way to a more realistic, sociocultural view of the world. The United States is, perhaps more than any other industrialized country, distinguished by the size and diversity of its racial and ethnic minority populations. Current trends promise that these features will endure. Fifty years from now, there will most likely be no single majority group in the United States. How will we fare as a nation when race-based issues such as immigration, job opportunities, and affirmative action are already so contentious today? In America Becoming, leading scholars and commentators explore past and current trends among African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans in the context of a white majority. This volume presents the most up-to-date findings and analysis on racial and social dynamics, with recommendations for ongoing research. It examines compelling issues in the field of race relations, including: Race and ethnicity in criminal justice. Demographic and social trends for Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Trends in minority-owned businesses. Wealth, welfare, and racial stratification. Residential segregation and the meaning of "neighborhood." Disparities in educational test scores among races and ethnicities. Health and development for minority children, adolescents, and adults. Race and ethnicity in the labor market, including the role of minorities in America's military. Immigration and the dynamics of race and ethnicity. The changing meaning of race. Changing racial attitudes. This collection of papers, compiled and edited by distinguished leaders in the behavioral and social sciences, represents the most current literature in the field. Volume 1 covers demographic trends, immigration, racial attitudes, and the geography of opportunity. Volume 2 deals with the criminal justice system, the labor market, welfare, and health trends. Both books will be of great interest to educators, scholars, researchers, students, social scientists, and policymakers.
