        How Philosophers Fail Themselves

        The somewhat different historyof philosophy

        by Otto A. Böhmer

        — Philosophy for beginners — For philosophy enthusiasts — A pleasant read This truly brilliant book tells of the sometimes sublime, sometimes exhilarating efforts of philosophers to maintain their attitude in everyday life without forgetting the meaning of their own words – and how they ultimately failed to do so. The minor, sometimes bizarre events in the lives of the great philosophers fit so aptly in the picture of the respective philosophy that one has to assume they could have been conceived to keep the associated intellectual giant in a strange and memorable mood. A book of cheerful science, full of wit, narrative and linguistic eloquence.

        Teenagers Reading Chinese Philosophy

        by Zhang Jiahua

In the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period of ancient China, the philosophical views of various schools met and contended, arousing a more brilliant spark of wisdom. The epic and unprecedented movement in the academy world was called the "Contention of a Hundred Schools of Thought." Scholars of various schools have written their wisdom achievements that they strove to secure through lifetime hard work into their own academic works, leaving us with a timeless ideological wealth that can teach us morals and enlighten our wisdom.   With simple and fluent texts and concise interpretation, Teenagers Reading Chinese Philosophy systematically introduces the essence of the philosophical thoughts of philosophers including Confucius, Mencius, Mozi, Laozi, Zhuangzi, Xun Kuang, and Han Feizi. As an enlightening book of Chinese philosophy designed for children, it eliminates the barriers to reading classical Chinese in the pre-Qin period, and makes the "abstruse and mysterious" philosophy easy for children to understand.

        Philosophy of Freedom

        by Myroslav Popovych

The book "Philosophy of Freedom" by Myroslav Popovych is part of the "Great Scientific Project" series, which collects the works of various authors. Myroslav Volodymyrovych was a great Ukrainian philosopher and thinker, an outstanding personality, and for many years he headed the Institute of Philosophy named after G. Skovoroda. In different years, he wrote articles and essays that were published in various journals in Ukraine and abroad. "Philosophy of Freedom" is a collection of essays and thoughts, which he himself systematised during the last months of his life. The author witnessed many historical events, and remembering them, he sought to understand why everything happened this way and not the other, whether anything could have been changed, whether the past of the Ukrainian people had an influence on them. Popovych searched for the truth, because it was the most important goal for him, and now posterity can find out what conclusions he reached. The topics of his interest vary, but mostly he researched theories and objects, and analysed historical events.

Lao Tzu Is Not Angry-Thirteen Lectures on Lao Tzu's Mind and Philosophy

        by Liu Xuyi

This book combines the three editions of Tao Te Ching, the silk book and the Chu bamboo slips. It is the first time to interpret Lao Tzu from the perspective of mentality and philosophy. It not only approaches the original meaning of Lao Tzu's thought as much as possible, but is also close to modern people's eagerness for quick success. The drawbacks and the needs of the soul. For contemporary people who are in anxiety, depression, anger, impetuousness and life pressure, it provides a way to relieve and practice, so as to help readers more accurately absorb the great wisdom of Lao Tzu. In this revision, the following work has been done: the language should be as popular as possible; a number of original incomplete statements have been revised; and new research findings have been added.

Zerstörung des moralischen Selbstbewußtseins: Chance oder Gefährdung?

Praktische Philosophie in Deutschland nach dem Nationalsozialismus

by Peter Rohs, Forum für Philosophie Bad Homburg, Siegfried Blasche, Wolfgang R. Köhler, Wolfgang Kuhlmann, Alan Posener

        Alarms

        by Kostiantyn Moskalets

The basis of Kostyantyn Moskalets's writing is a fine aesthetic taste, a good familiarity with works on philosophy, aesthetics, cultural studies, the ability to catch the trends of certain literary phenomena, and analytical thinking. Moskalets reveals a high culture of reception, the culture that was practiced in the Ukrainian literature by his favorite poets and critics Mykola Zerov and Vasyl Stus. The importance of this essay writing and literary criticism lies in direct, immediate vision, which respects the originality, individuality of all things and encourages reflection on the universal laws of the universe, leading to the appreciation of every moment of existence.

        The question of literature

The place of the literary in contemporary theory

        by Gerard Greenway, Elizabeth Beaumont-Bissell

        As literary theory has grown more influential, interdisciplinary and sophisticated, it has come to concern itself with a much greater range of issues and objects than those traditionally considered literary. It now addresses philosophy, history, psychology, politics and the media. Addressing a central and fundamental, but relatively neglected, issue in literary theory, this title seeks to recontextualise how theory has changed our understanding of literature and its questions by relating literature to the institution of the university, to ethical judgements and values, new media and computer technology and the nature of representative democracy. ;

Not Only Kobzar. The Anthology of Ukrainian literature. 1792–1883 (in two books)

        by Mykhailo Nazarenko

Ukrainian literature of the 19th century was far more exciting and diverse than one might imagine. Mykhailo Nazarenko's anthology contains one hundred and fifty texts that are not known or very little known to the modern reader (some of them are reprinted for the first time after 150 years of oblivion). These texts help to understand Ukrainian literary movement in a wider context. The compilation starts with the "The Song of the Black Sea Army" by Anton Golovaty. This novel precedes the famous "Aeneid" and marks the beginning of the printed literature "in the contemporary Ukrainian language". "It is not time..." by Ivan Franko is the last one in the compilation and describes further evolution of the independent Ukrainian literary word. The compilation also contains fifty essays about each of the authors: why did they write in a particular that way and about what? Why did some turn out to be forgotten, while others are remembered for their works?

How the Cherry Orchard Was Cut Down, or the Long Road from Bad Ems

        by Oksana Zabuzhko

This book commemorates Oksana Miyakovska-Radysh (1919–2020), a long-term archivist of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences (UVAN) in New York. Her greatness lies in serving her cause with absolute freedom from complexes imposed by Russia and its culture. Reading this book is like flipping through an old family album in Miyakovska-Radysh's company. The book reveals numerous secrets. It turns out that Chekhov's Three Sisters were not just a figment of the writer's imagination. Moreover, Chekhov himself was a young man from then Ukrainian Taganrog, fond of his native Ukrainian language, theatre and one of the three sisters. The book also explores the connection between the "new woman" in Russian literature and the 19th-century Ukrainian women's movement and looks into the past mistakes that still have repercussions for Ukrainians today.

Sleep and its spaces in Middle English literature

        Emotions, ethics, dreams

        by Megan Leitch

Middle English literature is intimately concerned with sleep and the spaces in which it takes place. In the medieval English imagination, sleep is an embodied and culturally determined act. It is both performed and interpreted by characters and contemporaries, subject to a particular habitus and understood through particular hermeneutic lenses. While illuminating the intersecting medical and moral discourses by which it is shaped, sleep also sheds light on subjects in favour of which it has hitherto been overlooked: what sleep can enable (dreams and dream poetry) or what it can stand in for or supersede (desire and sex). This book argues that sleep mediates thematic concerns and questions in ways that have ethical, affective and oneiric implications. At the same time, it offers important contributions to understanding different Middle English genres: romance, dream vision, drama and fabliau.

        Speculation by Commodity Index Funds

The Impact on Food and Energy Prices

by Scott H. Irwin, Dwight R. Sanders

Commodity futures prices exploded in 2007-08 and concerns about a new type of participant in commodity futures markets began to emerge. Market participants, regulators, and civic organizations began raising concerns that inflows from new "commodity index" investments were driving the increases in commodity prices instead of economic fundamentals. The main argument was that unprecedented buying pressure from these speculative long-only futures traders created massive bubbles that resulted in prices substantially exceeding fundamental value. At the time, it was not uncommon to link concerns about speculation and high prices to world hunger, food crises, and civil unrest. Naturally, this outcry resulted in numerous regulatory proposals to restrict speculation in commodity futures markets through transaction taxes, speculative position limits, and even the bizarre idea of a "virtual reserve" whereby a public agency would take futures positions opposite speculators. At the core, these assertions raised major economic questions about the efficiency of price discovery in commodity futures markets. Moreover, these so-called remedies did not come without a potential cost. Burdensome regulations would increase compliance and risk sharing costs across the global food system-lowering prices for producers and increasing costs to consumers. To guide this debate, a rigorous approach was needed to understand the dynamics between prices and commodity index activity. This book documents a curated selection of papers on the impact of index investment on commodity futures prices. The chronology of the papers roughly follows the timeline of our involvement in the world-wide debate about commodity speculation as it evolved after 2007. The 10 papers follow the evolving speculation debate with new author forwards highlighting the contribution and impact. Policy-makers, researchers, and market participants will find this not only as useful documentation of the debate; but, also a natural starting point when high commodity prices inevitably create the next speculation backlash.

        Philosophie und Begründung

Herausgegeben vom Forum für Philosophie, Bad Homburg. Wolfgang R. Köhler, Wolfgang Kuhlmann und Peter Rohs

by Peter Rohs, Wolfgang R. Köhler, Wolfgang Kuhlmann, Forum für Philosophie Bad Homburg, Wolfgang Kuhlmann

Crime, Law and Society in the Later Middle Ages

        by Anthony Musson, Edward Powell

This book provides an accessible collection of translated legal sources through which the exploits of criminals and developments in the English criminal justice system (c.1215-1485) can be studied. Drawing on the wealth of archival material and an array of contemporary literary texts, it guides readers towards an understanding of prevailing notions of law and justice and expectations of the law and legal institutions. Tensions are shown emerging between theoretical ideals of justice and the practical realities of administering the law during an era profoundly affected by periodic bouts of war, political in-fighting, social dislocation and economic disaster. Introductions and notes provide both the specific and wider legal, social and political contexts in addition to offering an overview of the existing secondary literature and historiographical trends. This collection affords a valuable insight into the character of medieval governance as well as revealing the complex nexus of interests, attitudes and relationships prevailing in society during the later Middle Ages.

        The Derby philosophers

Science and culture in British urban society, 1700–1850

        by Paul A. Elliott

The Derby Philosophers focuses upon the activities of a group of Midland intellectuals that included the evolutionist and physician Erasmus Darwin, Rev. Thomas Gisborne the evangelical philosopher and poet, Robert Bage the novelist, Charles Sylvester the chemist and engineer, William George and his son Herbert Spencer, the internationally renowned evolutionist philosopher who coined the phrase 'survival of the fittest', and members of the Wedgwood and Strutt families. The book explores how, inspired by science and through educational activities, publications and institutions including the famous Derbyshire General Infirmary (1810) and Derby Arboretum (1840), the Derby philosophers strove to promote social, political and urban improvements with national and international consequences. Much more than a parochial history of one intellectual group or town, this book examines science, politics and culture during one of the most turbulent periods of British history.
