Soul in a lunch box
Nelabai baisios istorijos
by Kotryna Zyle
Ten scary stories that could have happened in your city as well: at home, in the yard, or at school. According to Kotryna Zylė, these scary stories were inspired by her dad’s stories heard in childhood and unexpected encounters with mythical creatures. The author likes to construct her own stories— to take an old myth or legend and rewrite it by transferring the action of the story into today’s reality. If, when reading this book, you think that someone is hiding in the closet or on the balcony at night, if nails open on a tree branch instead of buds, and a bee suddenly flies out of a friend’s mouth—stay calm, it is all creatures doing.

Frauen 70+ Cool. Rebellisch. Weise.
Von Nancy Pelosi über Helen Mirren bis Élisabeth Badinter. Mit einem Vorwort von Iris Berben | Mit zahlreichen Fotografien
by Rita Kohlmaier, Iris Berben
»70 and female is the new cool«, schrieb jüngst die New York Times über diese großartige Generation der Frauen 70+. Mit Juliette Gréco, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jane Fonda, Charlotte Knobloch, Letizia Battaglia, Erika Pluhar, Herlinde Koelbl, Margaret Atwood, Tina Turner, Vivienne Westwood, Nancy Pelosi, Annie Ernaux, Élisabeth Badinter, Elfie Semotan, Alice Nkom, Marina Abramović, Helen Mirren, Carla Del Ponte, Shirin Ebadi, Marianne Birthler.

The Light in the Shadow
by Susana Aliano Casales
Living in the light sounds compelling. Living in the shade is a bit scary. But there is no need to worry, because it is not possible to live alone in one way or another. We generally travel between the two until we find our balance, something that the girl in this story has just discovered.

Union of Soviet Things
by Petro Yatsenko
The soviet realia are not entirely clear to modern adolescents. Childhood in the late Soviet Union was not like it is now. Back in those days, everything was different and even scary to some point: a premonition of the nuclear war, propaganda, shortages, and confusing household items. The main characters of the book, a teenage Matvii and his father Petro, go to Lviv to visit their grandmother. There are still heaps of Soviet things in her ceiling cabinet and they are good at telling stories. Paretns are good at this as well, if you ask them well. The book gives a reason to talk about feelings of nostalgia and values.

Ferocious February 2022. Evidence of the first days of the invasion.
by Darya Bura, Evgenia Podobna
On February 24, 2022, Ukrainians woke up in another reality: the sky was torned by the roar of Russian fighter jets, Russian missiles were flying at Ukrainian cities, subway stations have become the shelters. In this new reality, the concept of absolute security no longer existed. The first days of the war were very emotional and scary. You don't know what to do, you can't keep up with the news. You can't do anything because of these news... For not allowing anyone to rewrite our history, to put in it something that did not exist, like the Russians do when they swear black is white, we decided to collect people's memories of the first days of a full-scale invasion. To remember...

Cryptos
by Poznanski, Ursula
Where do we go when Nowhere is the only destination left? Kerrybrook is Jana‘s favourite virtual escape. An idyllic fishing village with beautiful nature and, every now and then, a breeze of fresh air from the nearby sea. Jana, is this world‘s designer and person in power, she’s satisfied with her masterpiece. Best job so far. Until one day, a dead body is found, in both, ’Virtual Reality‘ and the real world. In times of climate change, VR is the only safe place for humankind. That‘s why Jana needs to solve the crime, she’s responsible for stopping the destruction. • CliFi Thriller (Climate Fiction): Climate change & virtual reality • For fans of Black Mirror (Netflix) • All age readers • Strong, female protagonist • Highly relevant topic WHITE RAVENS recommendation (2021): "In the not too distant future, the world is an inhospitable place: droughts, storms, floods. That’s why world designers construct »alternative realities«, such as landscapes populated by dinosaurs, life at court in the Middle Ages, and surfing and chilling out on a beach. People can switch between these worlds at will and, when they die there, they are not truly dead; instead, they merely return to the »real world« – same as at night when they sleep. Then they are reunited with their body, which is lying inside a capsule. In »Cryptos«, Ursula Poznanski pulls out all the stops of storytelling: She embeds numerous references to human and intellectual history in an action-packed and extremely suspenseful thriller plot. In the process, she raises central existential and ontological questions that result from the interplay between the real and the virtual worlds. This complex dystopian novel is narrated in such an enjoyable way that readers will hardly notice their brains going into overdrive as they devour it."
