        The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative

        by Alan Fenwick, Wendie Norris, Becky McCall

        Schistosomiasis is Africa's second most prevalent infectious disease, but in many high-risk areas the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) has helped achieve up to a 75% reduction in its prevalence. Exploring the work and experiences involved in forming, establishing and managing a health intervention such as the SCI, this book divulges important lessons for anyone looking to replicate its success. Widely recognised as a cost-effective and successful intervention, its knock-on effects include improving overall physical health, school attendance and future prospects. Evaluating the SCI's development, implementation and results through an engaging personal story and written in an approachable style, this book covers: - Key strategic challenges faced and how the SCI overcame them to achieve and maintain low infection rates; - Methods used for raising funding for control and drug donations; - Mobilisation and mechanics of partnerships to facilitate supply and access to drugs; - Nature of working relationships and implementation across Africa; - Ways in which schistosomiasis control can be integrated into, and serve as a model for, other Neglected Tropical Disease programmes (NTD). Written from Professor Alan Fenwick's unique perspective as Director of the SCI, The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative is an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, health professionals and students in the fields of NTD control and global health.

This methods manual provides an introduction to the phenomenon to RNA Interference and specific protocols for RNAi, in organisms from plants and C.elegans to Drosophila and mammals. Waste Treatment, Revised Edition

        Reducing Global Waste

        by Anne Maczulak, Ph.D.

        Hazardous and nonhazardous wastes must be grouped by their physical form, chemical content, degree of hazard to the environment, or source in order to be treated by waste managers. These groupings also allow environmental scientists to learn about the trends in our society's waste and in society itself. Waste types can change dramatically in a period of less than 100 years. For example, waste from electronic products poses a big problem in the world today but this was not considered a serious threat in the early 1900s. The waste treatment industry plays a role in removing, treating, and disposing of human, household, and industrial wastes, either by burning, decomposing, or chemically transforming them so that the Earth's activities can continue. Beginning with a look at the global waste problem, Waste Treatment, Revised Edition defines the different classifications of materials that are treated today in waste management, including one of the most important concepts—waste stream. Waste streams are all the sources of various wastes as they move through the environment toward a final disposal. The control of waste streams is the central theme throughout this updated, full-color eBook. Chapters include: Assessing Global Waste Management Electronic Products and Metals Incineration Vitrification Solidification and Stabilization Reduction and Compaction Wastewater Treatment.

        Intervention and state-building in the Pacific

        The legitimacy of 'cooperative intervention'

        by Peter Lawler, Greg Fry, Tarcisius Kabutaulaka, Emmanuel Pierre Guittet, Alan Rutter

        State-building intervention in weak, war-torn or failing states has become a priority for the international community. However, the question of how to legitimately engage in the shaping of national governance remains, at the very least, a vexed one. This book explores this key issue through a critical examination of a new model of state-building intervention which has recently emerged in relation to the Pacific 'arc of crisis'. Initiated by the Australian Government in 2003, this 'cooperative intervention' doctrine, built on declared principles of partnership and respect for sovereignty, seems to offer a legitimate way to engage in state-building intervention. Drawing on a group of distinguished Pacific specialists, this book mounts a critique of these claims, showing how international legitimacy does not automatically translate into political legitimacy among those in the affected societies; and how the attempt to legitimise the intervention internationally may actually work against such legitimacy in the recipient state. These insights will be of value to those interested in public policy studies, international law, development studies and international relations. ;

        The principle of intervention

        by Horikha Zernia

        The "principle of intervention" is a detective story, a drama, a comedy, and a funny, touching story. It tells us about Stanislava, whose only support is work. The pure cold reason, logic, and mathematics. It is her safe space, the world where she sets her own game rules and feels safe. Suddenly she gets an offer she can't reject, but she can't accept it because it is strange, illogical, and dangerous. And yet, the associate professor of the department of higher and applied mathematics becomes a cook. She spent seven days in the city of her childhood, from which she once flew out in a traffic jam and vowed never to return. At least this week's task is to infiltrate the wedding and ensure that the bride is alive, to find and punish the murderer.

        Concrete guidance on harm reduction treatment (HaRT) with substance-using patients:• Written by experts from the field• Details a unique evidence-based approach• Includes example scripts• Provides case studies• Includes downloadable handouts Harm reduction approaches are effective alternatives to abstinence-based treatment for people who are not ready, willing, or able to stop using substances. The authors then share their expertise about harm reduction treatment (HaRT), an empirically based approach co-developed with community members impacted by substance-related harm – a first of its kind. The reader learns in detail about the pragmatic mindset and compassionate heartset of HaRT and the three treatment components: measurement and tracking of patient-preferred substance-related metrics, harm-reduction goal setting and achievement, and discussion of safer-use strategies.
