The governance of participation by multinational mining corporations

Why do multinational mining corporations use participation to undermine resistance? Do the struggles of local communities, activists and NGOs matter on a global scale? Why are there so many different global standards in mining? This book develops a new critical political economy approach to studying extractive accumulation, drawing on three detailed Indonesian cases to explain how participatory mechanisms continuously reshape and are reshaped by community-corporate conflict. Findings highlight feedback between local social relations, conflict, transnational activism, crises of legitimacy and global governance. The author argues that corporate social responsibility, community development, 'gender-mainstreaming' and environmental monitoring are neither simple outcomes of corporate ethics nor mere greenwashing strategies. Rather, participation is a mechanism to undermine resistance and create social relations amenable to extractive accumulation.

A comparative study of compulsory voting

About a quarter of all democracies today legally oblige their citizens to vote, making this an important aspect of electoral systems in many settings. Moreover, numerous commentators and policy-makers in voluntary voting states are coming to view mandatory attendance at the polls as an attractive option in the context of declining turnout. Yet there has been a dearth of analysis of the way in which compulsory voting shapes attitudes, behaviour and outcomes of the political process. This volume fills that gap by providing a comprehensive description, analysis and evaluation of compulsory voting as it is practiced throughout the world. Specifically, the study systematically examines the history of the institution, the normative arguments for and against it, and the influence it has on a range of political phenomena. These include electoral campaigns, political attitudes, electoral integrity and legitimacy, policy outcomes and turnout. The book also considers the feasibility of introducing compulsory voting in a contemporary democracy, as well as variations on the institution designed to broaden its appeal. ;

Free Time in the Global Village

The social, cultural and economic significance of leisure is increasing around the world. Watching television, reading, socializing with friends and family, playing sport, attending entertainment, arts and sporting events, and visiting the coast, the countryside, historic sites, museums, galleries and exhibitions are important aspects of modern life, and providing for these activities is an increasingly significant feature of modern economies. In most developed countries nationwide surveys are conducted periodically to assess levels of participation in leisure activities. This book brings together the results of such surveys from thirteen different countries, namely: Australia, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Poland, Spain and the USA. While the surveys vary enormously in scope, methodology, scale and timing, making it difficult to compare leisure patterns directly, they nevertheless indicate some marked similarities in leisure participation in industrial societies in the ‘global village’. The book provides a unique reference source on patterns of leisure participation in the thirteen countries, and also examines the methodological problems of conducting national leisure participation surveys, and their future prospects.
