The first comprehensive account of the public and cultural diplomacy campaigns carried out by the US in Yugoslavia during the height of the Cold War, this book examines the political role of culture in US-Yugoslav bilateral relations and the fluid links between information and propaganda. Tito allowed the US Information Agency and the State Department's cultural programmes to enter Yugoslavia, liberated from Soviet control. The exchange of intellectual and political personnel helped foster the US-Yugoslav relationship, yet it posed severe ideological challenges for both sides. By providing new insights into porous borders between freedom and coercion in Tito's regime, this book shows how public diplomacy acted as an external input for Yugoslav liberalisation and dissident movements. Using extensive archival research and interviews, Konta analyses the links between information and propaganda, and the unintended effects of propaganda beyond the control of producers and receivers.

Languages of racism and resistance in Neapolitan street markets

This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. Race talk is about language use as an anti-racist practice in multicultural city spaces. The book contends that attention to talk reveals the relations of domination and subordination in heterogeneous, ethnically diverse and multilingual contexts, while also helping us to understand how transcultural solidarity might be expressed. Drawing on original ethnographic research conducted on licensed and unlicensed market stalls in in heterogeneous, ethnically diverse and multilingual contexts, this book examines the centrality of multilingual talk to everyday struggles about difference, positionality and entitlement. In these street markets, Neapolitan street vendors work alongside documented and undocumented migrants from Bangladesh, China, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Nigeria and Senegal as part of an ambivalent, cooperative and unequal quest to survive and prosper. As austerity, anti-immigration politics and urban regeneration projects encroached upon the possibilities of street vending, talk across linguistic, cultural, national and religious boundaries underpinned the collective action of street vendors struggling to keep their markets open. The edginess of their multilingual organisation offered useful insights into the kinds of imaginaries that will be needed to overcome the politics of borders, nationalism and radical incommunicability.

Der Dialog entzündet sich zunächst an Tugendhats bisheriger Moralphilosophie, insbesondere am Begründungsbegriff, den er in seinen Vorlesungen über Ethik entwickelt hat. Moralische Normen, so erklärt der alte Herr, seien per definitionem Handlungsregeln, die als begründungsbedürftig angesehen werden, aber sie können nicht an und für sich begründet werden, sondern sie sind gegenüber den Betroffenen zu begründen. Im weiteren Verlauf des Gesprächs geht es um den Gerechtigkeitsbegriff und den moralischen Universalismus, um Sitten und Konventionen, um moralische Motive und schließlich auch um die "Blutrünstigkeit" der Moral: Die Moral der Herzensgüte wird als hölzernes Eisen verworfen. Am Ende des Gesprächs wenden sie sich dem Problem der Korruption in modernen Gesellschaften zu und erwägen den Vorschlag, Korruption zu entmoralisieren und nur durch externe Sanktionen zu unterbinden.
