I would like to be John Fante

        by Daniel Herrera

The youthful obsession with women, the desire for freedom and the dreams of becoming a great writer enliven the protagonist of Quisiera ser John Fante. The aspiring literary hero lives in Torreón, buried by heat, boredom and surrounded by beautiful women. He has read John Fante, an emblem of youth literature, and wants to be known and revered as its admired writer. Persecuted by his landlord, ignored by his potential readers and despised by the women he is passionate about, the aspiring writer begins to understand that reality destroys the youthful dream: he is not John Fante, he lives in Torreón and nobody cares what he writes.
