The power of citizens and professionals in welfare encounters

The influence of bureaucracy, market and psychology

        by Nanna Mik-Meyer

This book is about power in welfare encounters. Present-day citizens are no longer the passive clients of the bureaucracy and welfare workers are no longer automatically the powerful party of the encounter. Instead, citizens are expected to engage in active, responsible and coproducing relationships with welfare workers. However, other factors impact these interactions; factors which often pull in different directions. Welfare encounters are thus influenced by bureaucratic principles and market values as well. Consequently, this book engages with both Weberian (bureaucracy) and Foucauldian (market values/NPM) studies when investigating the powerful welfare encounter. The book is targeted Academics, post-graduates, and undergraduates within sociology, anthropology and political science.

‘Survival Capitalism’ and the Big Bang

Culture, contingency and capital in the making of the 1980s financial revolution

        by Emma Barrett

This book about the Thatcher government and the City of London tells the compelling human story of the people and processes that made Britain's 1980s financial revolution. Fusing insider testimony with new archival discoveries, it examines high stakes and networked solutions, and uncovers new objectives that drove reforms. In so doing it demystifies a major shift in capitalism. This has implications for our understandings of government and capitalism, from the way we think about the origins of subsequent financial crises to today's growing inequalities. Survival Capitalism offers new insights into the last major restructuring of the City, disrupts myths surrounding the logics of the market, and pays attention to people and processes at a time when the City of London again faces major change as Britain seeks to find its place outside the European Union in the wake of Brexit.

        — Ways out of the digital disaster — For healthcare professionals and informed patients Modern information technologies can and should contribute to improving the quality and transparency of medical care and making healthcare more economical – and all for the benefit and well-being of patients. Well, that would be the noble approach. All the talk about health insurance cards, telematics infrastructure and electronic patient files stirs up emotions. Peter Schaar, long-standing Federal Data Protection Commissioner, brings light to the dark data and health thicket. Why are innovations in the healthcare sector met with great scepticism by many stakeholders? How can we speed up the development and implementation of meaningful ITsupported solutions? What role does the narrow, small-scale regulatory framework play – not only, but also in data protection?

        My Bank Washes Greener

Eco lies told by the finance sector

        by Bernd Villhauer

        — By the expert in ethical business — Once you have finished this, you will never fall for green financial lies again — Global Ethic Institute (Weltethos- Institut) network And suddenly every bank is sustainable. This truly necessary "debate book" explains in a wellfounded way what green-washing means in the financial sector, and why banks, insurance companies, asset managers, stockbrokers and other financial players clothe themselves in their allegedly so green-and-friendly cloak. It provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the various forms of greenwashing, how we can recognise the different "varieties" and – above all – how we can avoid them. This is also important because the entire financial and capital system is an important part of a sustainable future – and this can only succeed if it is honest, transparent and impact-orientated.

Water struggles as resistance to neoliberal capitalism

        A time of reproductive unrest

        by Madelaine Moore

This book provides an important intervention into social reproduction theory and the politics of water. Presenting an incorporated comparison, it analyses the conjuncture following the 2007 financial crisis through the lens of water expropriation and resistance. This brings into view the way that transnational capital has made use of and been facilitated by the strategic selectivities of both the Irish and the Australian state, as well as the particular class formations that emerged in resistance to such water grabs. What is revealed is a crisis-ridden system that is marked by increasing reproductive unrest - class understood through the lens of social reproduction theory. As an important analysis of two significant water struggles, the book makes a compelling argument for integrating the study of social movements within critical political economy.

A Tale of a Man, a Worm and a Snail

        The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative

by Alan Fenwick, Wendie Norris, Becky McCall

Schistosomiasis is Africa's second most prevalent infectious disease, but in many high-risk areas the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative (SCI) has helped achieve up to a 75% reduction in its prevalence. Exploring the work and experiences involved in forming, establishing and managing a health intervention such as the SCI, this book divulges important lessons for anyone looking to replicate its success. Widely recognised as a cost-effective and successful intervention, its knock-on effects include improving overall physical health, school attendance and future prospects. Evaluating the SCI's development, implementation and results through an engaging personal story and written in an approachable style, this book covers: - Key strategic challenges faced and how the SCI overcame them to achieve and maintain low infection rates; - Methods used for raising funding for control and drug donations; - Mobilisation and mechanics of partnerships to facilitate supply and access to drugs; - Nature of working relationships and implementation across Africa; - Ways in which schistosomiasis control can be integrated into, and serve as a model for, other Neglected Tropical Disease programmes (NTD). Written from Professor Alan Fenwick's unique perspective as Director of the SCI, The Schistosomiasis Control Initiative is an essential resource for researchers, policymakers, health professionals and students in the fields of NTD control and global health.
