This book follows the lives of female Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution and became nurses. Nursing was nominally a profession but with its poor pay and harsh discipline, it was unpopular with British women. In the years preceding the Second World War, hospitals in Britain suffered chronic nurse staffing crises. As the country faced inevitable war, the Government and the profession's elite courted refugees as an antidote to the shortages, but many hospitals refused to employ Continental Jews. The book explores the changes in the refugees' status and lives from the war years to the foundation of the National Health Service and to the latter decades of the twentieth century. It places the refugees at the forefront of manoeuvres in nursing practice, education and research at a time of social upheaval and alterations in the position of women.

Hamutal Bar-Yosef is a well-known Israeli writer, poet, translator, and scholar. She was born in a kibbutz to parents who lost their family in the Holocaust. Her only brother was killed in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence. At age twenty, the author married the playwright Yosef Bar-Yosef and had four children; one committed suicide at sixteen. She provided for her family first as a high school teacher, and then by writing guides for teachers. The author didn’t write her PhD dissertation until after turning forty, and she became a professor of Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University. She has published eight scholarly books and fifteen books of poetry, and she has won numerous distinguished prizes for her poetry. Her collection of stories, The Wall, Etc., (originally titled Music) won the ASI (Association of Israeli Writers) prize. Professor Bar-Yosef has translated poetry and prose fiction from English, French, and Russian. Eine englischsprachige nordamerikanische Ausgabe wurde Anfang 2019 von Samuel Wachtmans Sons, Inc., CA, veröffentlicht.184 Seiten. What does it mean to be called an industrial designer? This book traces the remarkable rise of this professional identity in historical perspective from a position of anonymity in the early twentieth century, to mid-century professionalisation, to decline and disintegration by 1980. Drawing on new, extensive, original archival research, it uncovers the history of a profession in a state of re-invention, 1930-1980 in Britain and the United States. The book tests assumptions about the relationship between the professions in the two countries, bringing them into comparative historical perspective for the first time. The gendered dynamics of professionalisation and their interaction with the representation of the heroic male designer are interrogated and critically examined. Building on new gender perspectives to the history of the industrial design profession, the book calls for a re-examination of the limits and boundaries of what constitutes professional identity and work.

The female sublime from Milton to Swinburne examines the feminisation of the post-Miltonic male poet, not through cultural history, but through a series of mythic or classical figures which include Philomela, Orpheus and Sappho. It recovers a disfiguring sublime imagined as an aggressive female force which feminises the male poet in an act that simultaneously deprives and energises him.
