        Detective Story from Berlin 1926

        by Gunnar Kunz

Berlin, 1926. revelations about coup plans and vigilante justice of right wing groups shake the Weimar Republic, the dispute over the expropriation of the lords divides the country. An actress is murdered in a theatre. But was the attack really aimed at her or her colleague? For their still-husband, the death of his wife would be all too convenient. And what about her rival and her rejected suitor? Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is being rehearsed, and Hendrik Lilienthal and his sister-in-law Diana, who are investigating the case together with Hendrik's brother Gregor, cannot help but feel that the love madness on stage has its parallels in real life. Finally, another attack is perpetrated and the investigators understand: they have to hurry if they don't want to lament another murder. Gunnar Kunz, who worked at the theater for fourteen years, not only describes the theater milieu with its ups and downs, but also revives the exciting time of the twenties. Sutton publishing house, Erfurt 2016. 240 pages, 12.99 Euro. ISBN-13: 978-3-95400-601-4

        Grada Popular

        by Ignacio Pato

Whose football is it? Judging by the direction it's taking, men in suits and expensive perfumes are about to expropriate a sport that belonged to the people. Now that the ball is moving away from the stands, this book redirects the focus and points to the fan. Ignacio Pato travels through eight cities to meet eight clubs and eight feelings: those of the fans of Liverpool, AEK, Napoles, Velez Mostar, Olympique de Marseille, Rapid Vienna, Besiktas and Rayo Vallecano. Communities that are a beacon of resistance and romance. With an enthusiastic style, the author runs away from the past to strengthen a relationship that will never be broken. Soccer is the people's game.

        A Rugged Nation

Mountains and the Making of Modern Italy

        by Marco Armiero

A Rugged Nation uncovers how Italian identity and mountains have constituted one another. State regimes since unification in 1861 have made mountains into national symbols and resources. The nationalisation of Italian mountains has been a story of military conquest and resistance, ecological and social transformation, expropriating resources and imposing meanings. World War I permanently transformed mountain landscapes and people, nationalising both. When the Fascists came to power, the process of politicisation of mountains reached its acme; the regime constructed and exploited mountains both rhetorically and materially, on one hand celebrating ruralism and rural people and, on the other, giving mountain natural resources to large hydro-electric corporations. The book ends with two exemplar tales about mountains and their place in the Italian recent history: the Resistance against the Nazi-Fascists, which found its sanctuary up in the mountains, and the 1963 Vajont disaster, which, with 2,000 people killed, represents the tragic epilogue of the hydroelectric modernisation of the Alps.

        Hybris and Nemesis

How the dark side of power leads us into the abyss - Insights from 5000 years

        by Rainer Mausfeld

The risks and dangers of military and ecological de-struction are now so great that they threaten humancivilisation par excellence. The challenge of creating agood, liveable and well-ordered community is moreurgent today than ever before. But the only means onwhich hope can be founded is de facto no longer avail-able to us today: democracy. The cognitive psycholo-gist Rainer Mausfeld argues that democracy has be-come an empty word: while democracy was once aninstrument to contain elite depravity, the guiding civili-sational idea of democracy has been expropriatedfrom us, distorted, and turned into its opposite: therule of elites. In a broad sweep, Mausfeld shows howthis devastating development could have come aboutand what we must do to escape the civilisationalabyss.
