        THE SNIPER

        by Chang Kuo-li

Imagine Jason Bourne meets an older and grumpier John McClane, both inadvertent players in a top-secret, international arms deal scandal worth billions of dollars. Spice the story with black humor, Chinese cuisine, and secret societies, and you get THE SNIPER – a truly original take on the international thriller, Taiwanese style.   Twelve days before retirement, Taipei police detective Wu is given a curious case: A Navy officer’s suicide in his hotel room. He is clearly murdered, Wu thinks, but the military wants to close the case as suicide, with no questions asked. And that is only the first of a series of suspicious deaths.   At the same time, a sleeping cell is called to action. Alex is a young Taiwanese sniper, ex-Marine, ex-French Foreign Legion, currently a fried rice chef in Manarola, Italy. Ordered to assassinate a high-level Taiwanese government advisor in Rome, he is soon on the run, hunted by his old brothers-in-arms across Europe.   Who is killing Navy officers in Taiwan? And who ordered the kill in Rome? As Wu races against time to solve the mounting cases before retirement, Alex embarks on a journey back to Taiwan, back to his beginning, where a group of war orphans were raised by a benevolent “grandpa” and trained to serve the nation.   Based on the biggest military corruption case in Taiwan history – the murder of Navy Captain Yin Ching-feng – THE SNIPER is both a masterclass in thriller writing and a study of the heart of darkness in time of war and peace. Chang is working on the sequel, THE SNIPER AND THE MISSING BULLETS.

How I Became a Champion of England

        by Campino

The story actually starts with Kevin Keegan, the Liverpool forwardwith the extravagant perm who became Campino’s idol during the1970s because he showed him which side he needed to be on.And when Campino became a punk musician, England was the answerto all his questions. He adored full English breakfast, Londonand even the Queen. What could be more obvious than the decisionfor the best football team in the world, Liverpool FC? This earlypassion has summed up all the contradictions of his backgroundas the son of an English mother and a German judge. Didit also have to do with the love for his mother and the austerity ofhis Prussian-bred father? - In his first book, Campino talks aboutall this, his German-English family and his burning passion for LiverpoolFC, which has quite a lot to do with his love of music. In it,a musician shows himself as a narrator who writes about tragedyand comedy, about loyalty and happiness - and about how it feelsto finally, finally be Champions of England.

        Accidental Hitman

        by A.W. Wilson

“Hitmen don’t worry about what their underwear’s like, but then proper hitmen don’t poo in their pants.” When Tom White’s dead-end life is blighted by his neighbour’s parties Tom’s aversion to face to face confrontation leads him to an unusual action: he kills the noise pollutant. Unknown to Tom, the neighbour was a target for Stan Costanza, head of a powerful criminal enterprise. Costanza’s heavies are more adept than the police at tracking Tom down and in a farcically comic meeting become convinced that Tom is a skilled lone assassin “one of them ones with the eastern mystical influences”. They offer him another hit and Tom, too scared and perhaps too flattered to decline, takes the job, and the next. Colin, Tom’s best friend, shares Tom’s macabre moral compass and rides shotgun on his assignments, leading to a series of comedy set-pieces but inevitably into darker waters as the reality of their actions takes hold, causing the pair to fall out. Tom catches the interest of Laura, the barmaid in his local pub, and becomes torn between his desire for the long-term object of his affections and the need to keep his nefarious activities from her. When the impossibly beautiful Stephanie arrives, Tom assumes she is a high-ranking member of Costanza’s operation and takes the contracts she assigns. Stephanie doesn’t tell him that her father was murdered by Stan Costanza in a criminal coup d’etat. Stephanie is orchestrating a turf-war between two rival gangs using Tom, along with some of Costanza’s own people, as a key piece in her game to avenge her father’s death and regain her birthright. By the time he realises that he is an unwitting double agent, Tom is being pursued by two police forces and both gangs. As the net closes around him he has no option but to ‘fess up to Laura, make peace with Colin and leave his fate in the hands of Stephanie. Costanza meets his arch-rival, Joe Barrett, for a sit-down to discusstheir mutual problem - namely Tom White - but this is actually Stephanie’s final push. She shows her cards to the hapless crime-lords, including the fact that she has turned most of their own men against them. In a final showdown, Stephanie kills both men and takes what is rightfully hers. But what of Tom? Wanted for murder he badly needs a fresh start. Stephanie uses her valuable connections to set up a new life for him, Laura and Colin under the cloak of the witness protection program in the USA. They have a new home, new names and Tom has a new job, one that makes good use of his talents and protects his anonymity: an executioner for the state of Texas. Accidental Hitman is a thriller but features large doses of comedy in the rapport between the characters, the first-person narrator’s musings on modern life and the farcical situations Tom and Colin bumble into as they carry out their murders-to-order. Fandelli

        by Guillermo Fadanelli

The novel consists of a kind of dialogue between a man who remembers his youth (Fandelli) and a ruthless and cruel critical voice that is born or comes from the tormented or tragic consciousness of Fandelli himself. In this story, as part of the scenography, the reader finds the poverty of some marginal neighborhoods, the architecture of “Colonial” and modern Mexico, the public Mexican university strike in 1986, and the intimate story of the main character’s family. The novel is brief, intimate, sharp and insolent. The rhythm of the narration is vertiginous. We could say that it’s a prose poetry book. It has been published only in Mexico in 2019. But it has free rights outside of this country.   guillermofadanelli.com
