»Der Verführer« schildert die Entwicklung eines jungen Mannes von seinem 12. bis zum 24. Lebensjahr. Im Mittelpunkt steht sein Konflikt zwischen idealer und sinnlicher Liebe. Wie Ernst Weiß selbst hat auch der Ich-Erzähler bereits in früher Kindheit seinen über alles geliebten Vater verloren. Diese Liebe scheint absurd, zumal der Vater, ein Frauenheld, Spekulant und »Verführer« zum rücksichtslos sinnesfrohen Leben, sich kaum um seine Familie kümmert. Dennoch ist die frühe Prägung durch den Vater so stark, daß sie die gesamte Pubertät seines Sohnes bestimmt. Von der Mutter erzogen, dem Vater nicht nachzueifern, verfällt der Sohn erst recht dessen »verbotenem Lebenswandel«. Zu seinen Erlebnissen mit Lily, der letzten Geliebten des Vaters, der Krankenschwester Karla und zahlreichen anderen »Blüten und Schönen«, die er verführt, kontrastiert wie ein Idealbild seine Beziehung zu einem behinderten adligen Mädchen, einer mit der Figur des Vaters gekoppelten, flüchtigen Kindheitsbekanntschaft.
