Wenn P. G. Wodehouse von „autobiographischen Ausschweifungen“ spricht, sollte man keine konventionelle Biographie erwarten. Auf altbekannte Weise erzählt der Autor statt dessen von Knebelbärten in Kalifornien, Türspionen in New York, von Gürteltieren und vom Schnirkelschneckensammeln und überrascht mit schlagenden Argumenten gegen körperliche Ertüchtigung und für lebenslanges Rauchen. Ganz nebenbei erfahren wir auch einiges von seinen Anfängen als Bankangestellter, von seinen ersten Schreibversuchen und seinem literarischen Durchbruch, doch sollte nicht alles für reinen Wein gehalten werden, was P. G. Wodehouse uns hier einschenkt.

Die Poesie des Abendmahls

Brot und Wein standen über verblüffend lange Epochen hinweg im Zentrum abendländisch-christlicher Weltbilder. Nun ist die Leistung des Abendmahls auch keine geringe. Es läßt – so will es die katholische wie die lutherische Lehre – Gottes Sohn stets erneut leiblich gegenwärtig sein. Brot und Wein bedeuten eben nicht nur, sondern sind wahrhaftig Christi Leib und Blut. In den Abendmahlelementen verschränken sich demnach Sein und Sinn. Das Abendmahl verspricht in buchstäblich substantieller Weise, daß Sein sinnvoll und daß Sinn existent ist. Jochen Hörisch charakterisiert deshalb die Leistung des Abendmahls als eine onto-semiologische: es vermittelt die Logik des Seins mit der der Zeichen. Das ist eine Leistung, die Theologen, Philosophen und Dichter seit jeher fasziniert hat. »Brot und Wein« entfaltet die Geschichte dieser Faszination – und die Geschichte ihrer Erosion. Es beginnt seinen thematischen Gang bei den neutestamentarischen Quellen und führt über die Reformation und das Barock, Goethe und Hölderlin bis zu Thomas Manns »Zauberberg« und Peter Handkes »Lehre der Sainte-Victoire«. Das Abendmahl, so die leitende These, verliert nämlich in dem Maße an Plausibilität, wie Geld für funktionale und neue Medien für simulative Korrelationen von Sein und Sinn sorgen.

Phosphorus Loss from Soil to Water

Phosphorus is an essential element for plant growth and its input has long been recognised as necessary to maintain profitable crop production. However, phosphorus inputs can also increase the biological activity of surface waters and this can lead to the destruction of such aquatic ecosystems. Advanced eutrophication of surface water leads to problems with its use for fisheries, recreation, industry and drinking, due to the increased growth of undesirable algae and aquatic weeds, and oxygen shortages caused by their death and decomposition. It is therefore important to have a good understanding of the causes and mode of phosphorus loss from soil to water, to enable the problems to be controlled and managed. This book has been developed from an international workshop held in Ireland in late 1995. It is the first comprehensive consideration of the topic, and many leading researchers in the area have contributed to it. It is essential reading for all soil scientists and freshwater biologists, as well as for environmentalists, ecologists and agriculturalists concerned with sustainable land management and pollution. The book is also recommended to fisheries managers, fertilizer manufacturers and biologists working for water utilities.

Weine begleiteten Goethe zeit seines Lebens bis zur letzten Stunde. Von Goethes Mutter wissen wir: Ohne Wein wäre der Dichter wohl nicht am Leben geblieben. Er kam – wie er in »Dichtung und Wahrheit« schreibt – „für tot auf die Welt“, und seine erste sinnliche Erfahrung waren der Geruch und die lebenserweckende Wirkung des Weins, mit dem er eingerieben wurde. In einer „Wein-Biographie“ gehen die Herausgeber Goethes Erfahrungen mit dem “süßen Saft der Reben“ nach. Als Enkel eines Weinhändlers, der im Weinkeller des Elternhauses kostbare Weine vorfand, verzichtete Goethe weder in Weimar noch auf Reisen auf sein Lebenselixier. „Wenn man nicht lieben kann, soll man nicht trinken“: Der Band versammelt Gedichte, Lieder, Aufzeichnungen und Briefe Goethes über den Wein. Schließlich erfährt man in einer „Weinkunde“ Näheres zu Goethes Lieblingsweinen, seine Maxime lautete: „Für Sorgen sorgt das liebe Leben / Und Sorgenbrecher sind die Reben.“

They need evidence to condemn those criminals who terrorize the population with old indigenous beliefs. They call themselves witches. They are organized as La Recta Provincia or La Hermandad de la Casa Grande. They lie to scare and change the names of the cities on the island –Achao, Dalcahue or Quicaví–, confusing them with others: Buenos Aires, Villarrica, Salamanca. If they were only myths, it would be enough for the government to forget that secret place. But the one who calls himself the Greatest Liar in the World claims to have escaped the sorcerers and travels the north glimpsing the aliens: he talks to them of malice, monsters and murders; of the bloody clans' struggles to become a decaying reign. For these lies, or to secure an unstable national pride, coronels and tenants decide to put an end to things that a mortal has no power to finish.
