View Rights PortalThis is a collection of 20 short stories and 11 mini-novels by Wang Meng. Characterized by its life-based artistry, many of the short stories contain profound connotations with a tendency towards the supernatural, while the mini novels feature obscure Buddhist allegorical words for people to reflect on. These works were written over a period of half a century, so the book constitutes a unique collection.
Portraiture and Social Identity in Eighteenth-Century Rome sheds new light on the relationship between portraiture, social affirmation and the myth of Antiquity as it was experienced and elaborated in eighteenth-century Rome. Drawing upon a wealth of unpublished documents and previously unexamined literary texts, it offers new insights and readings into how the experience of the City in terms of abstract or concrete appropriation affected the ways of portraying native or visiting elite sitters. The Grand Tour portrait, usually discussed as a purely British phenomenon, is here put in its original context of production and compared to the portraits of the Romans themselves. Portraiture and social identity in eighteenth-century Rome will become essential reading for anyone with a particular interest in eighteenth-century art and its social use. ;
The result of the combined work of Frédéric BRÉMAUD and Jean-Claude BAUER – the latter having covered the 1987 trial for Antenne 2 – KLAUS BARBIE, THE RAT'S ROUTE retraces the life of one of the greatest war criminals of the 20th century. Drawing on historical sources and the participation of Jean-Olivier VIOUT, the Deputy General Prosecutor during this historic trial, as well as Serge KLARSFELD, a staunch advocate for the cause of Jewish deportees – who pens the foreword to this work – they deliver a necessary narrative, bearing witness to one of the most resonant trials in history.
Who is it that is painted? Who is it that sees what is painted? They can be the artist and his portrait, the viewer and the person portrayed.

The first history of one of London's most extraordinary streets. Running along the Thames's northern shore and spanning three-quarters of a mile from Trafalgar Square to Temple Bar, the Strand has been a witness to London's growth and change from the earliest years of the city's existence. In The Strand: A biography, Geoff Browell and Eileen Chanin uncover the deep history of this remarkable street. Tracing its origins in the Roman era, they reveal how it grew in importance as authority shifted from church to aristocracy, then to commerce, media and law. Over time, everything that mattered converged on the Strand: tradition and ceremony clashed with rebellion and destitution. By 1910, the street was known as the 'centre of the world'. Drawing on remarkable archival discoveries, Browell and Chanin present the most complete and compelling history of the Strand ever written. Filled with surprising, untold stories, The Strand: A biography is a must-read for lovers of one of the world's greatest cities.

Humphrey Jennings has been described as the only real poet that British cinema has produced. His documentary films are remarkable records of Britain at peace and war, and his range of representational approaches transcended accepted notions of wartime propaganda and revised the strict codes of British documentary film of the 1930s and 1940s. Poet, propagandist, surrealist and documentary filmmaker - Jennings' work embodies an outstanding mix of startling apprehension, personal expression and representational innovation. This book carefully examines and expertly explains the central components of Jennings' most significant films, and considers the relevance of his filmmaking to British cinema and contemporary experience. Films analysed include Spare Time, Words for Battle, Listen to Britain, Fires Were Started, The Silent Village, A Diary for Timothy and Family Portrait. ;
