        The Saxon War

by Bruno of Merseburg, Bernard S. Bachrach, David Bachrach

Bruno, a cleric who served the archbishop of Magdeburg and subsequently the bishop of Merseburg during the course of the 1060s to the 1080s, composed one of the most important historical works treating the tumultuous period in the history of the German kingdom in the second half of the eleventh century. Bruno’s main focus in his Saxon War is the civil wars that engulfed the German kingdom from the mid 1060s through the end of the 1080s. However, as a historian of contemporary affairs, Bruno also offers crucial insights regarding the so-called Investiture Controversy, which Bruno treats largely as a political conflict between a tyrannical German ruler and the Saxons with some papal intervention, social conflict within the German kingdom, as well as the development of economic and military institutions. Unlike his contemporary Lampert of Hersfeld, Bruno was closely connected to the foremost leaders of the Saxon resistance against King Henry IV, and provides unique insights regarding their plans, hopes, and fears. Bruno also provides nearly two dozen full-text copies of letters that were sent by the main participants in the intra-German conflict as well as ten letters from Pope Gregory VII, four of which do not appear in any other source including the papal register. An additional important feature of Bruno’s history is that he treats military matters in an extraordinarily detailed manner, and is the most important narrative source for understanding the conduct of war during the second half of the eleventh century. Bruno’s detailed treatment of military matters is based upon his very extensive contacts with leading military figures, as well as his own personal observations regarding the numerous battles that punctuated the struggle between the Saxons and their erstwhile ruler. In sum, Bruno offers both unique perspectives and unique information about a crucial period in both German and European history, which make this text valuable not only for scholars, but also for a broader audience interested in the political, religious, and particularly military history of the eleventh century. This will be the first English translation of this work.

        Mitteldeutsche Geschichte

        Sachsen – Sachsen-Anhalt – Thüringen

        by Raßloff, Steffen

What unites the three states of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia? What separates them? These questions are answered by the historian Steffen Raßloff in his overall account of Central German history. He spans the arch from prehistory and early history to the most recent times. He reports on the kingdom of the Thuringians as well as on the Wettin nobility, which once dominated large parts of the region. The historical diversity of Central Germany is also impressive: from classical Weimar to the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom and the baroque Dresden of Augustus the Strong, a uniquely dense cultural landscape has developed. Numerous impulses emanated from the land of Luther, Bach, Goethe and the Bauhaus and still shape our culture today. In an entertaining way, the author reviews important places, events and personalities of the three countries, gives references to important museums and memorials and reflects today's culture of remembrance.

Resistance and practices of rebellion at the age of Reformations (16th-18th centuries)

by Rocío G. Sumillera, Manuela Águeda García-Garrido, José Luis Martínez-Dueñas

The chapters in this volume examine various understandings of theories of political resistance and obedience on the part of myriad authors, Catholic as well as Protestant, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. They consider how the Reformation spurred reflections on the concept of resistance, pondering over the circumstances that would call for resistance and that would sanction it, and the agents who could legitimately initiate and manage the deposition of political, religious and royal authorities. From sixteenth-century Spanish readings of the Reformation, to different episodes of active resistance through France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, to the experience of religious exiles in the English colonies in North America, this volume provides an illustrative sample of case studies on, on the one hand, processes of construction of the rhetoric of resistance, and, on the other, instances of actual uprisings.

        Begegnungen mit Peter Schreier

        by Matthias Herrmann

Peter Schreier died on 25 December 2019 in Dresden. As a tenor and conductor he had a unique effectiveness all over the world.  This included countless encounters with personalities of international and regional musical life.  The volume "Begegnungen mit Peter Schreier" bears witness to this and to his charisma. Conductors and musicians, singers, pianists, a composer and many others report in a mosaic-like manner on very different aspects of their collaboration: in concert and opera, in rehearsals and recordings as well as in their personal surroundings.  Both renowned personalities and music creators of younger generations have taken up the pen in 2020.  They offer an impressive reflection of Peter Schreiers, who enjoyed working with young musicians. This also creates a colourful image of Peter Schreier as a person. For decades he has been able to reach his listeners in the depths of their soul and move them inwardly. The 29 commemorative texts are joined by four speeches on the awarding of prizes to Schreier, either objectifying or personal. Three texts verbalise Schreier's view of Bach, the central composer of his life since his time in the Dresdner Kreuzchor, as well as his activities in the musical country of Austria and Japan. The volume is rounded off with speeches in the farewell service for Peter Schreier on 8 January 2020 in the Kreuzkirche in Dresden and a selection of pictures.

Landschaftswandel. Das Mitteldeutsche Seenland – Die Erde hat Gedächtnis

        by Eißmann, Lothar/Junge, Frank W.

The uniquely documented transformation of the mining region in Central Germany tells a story of global dimensions. An insight into the natural mutability of the earth and its living creations, incomparable in space and time, becomes visible. The layers exposed in the open-cast lignite mines become a journey through time for those in the know, through the millions of years of our earth up to the present day. Stages and witnesses of the transformation in a region: from the natural tropical moorland, sea and ice age land, to the settlement and cultural land of early man, to the mining and industrial land and the new beginning, the transformation of a large region into a lake landscape.Today's man-made lake district is taking shape and becoming a global model and testing ground for the large-scale transformation of a post-mining landscape. The experiences of the Central German region become a global model case of wound healing of man-made, hostile landscape interventions and an opportunity to design in reverence and adaptation to "Mother Earth".
