        Experimental Design and Analysis for Tree Improvement

        by Emlyn Williams, Chris Harwood, Colin Matheson

        This third edition of Experimental Design and Analysis for Tree Improvement provides a set of practical procedures to follow when planning, designing and analysing tree improvement trials. Using many fully worked examples, it outlines how to: design field, glasshouse and laboratory trials; efficiently collect and construct electronic data files; pre-process data, screening for data quality and outliers; analyse data from single and across-site trials; and interpret the results from statistical analyses. The authors address the many practical issues often faced in forest tree improvement trials and describe techniques that will efficiently give conclusive results. The techniques provided are applicable to the improvement of not only trees, but to crops in general. Building on the success of the second edition, this new edition has been fully revised to include the construction of p-rep and spatial designs using the commercially available software package for design generation (CycDesigN). For analysis of the examples, it provides online Genstat and SAS programs and a link to R programs.

        Designs on modernity

        Exhibiting the city in 1920s Paris

        by Tag Gronberg

        Presents the 1925 Paris Exhibition as a key moment in attempts to update the image of Paris as "capital of the 19th century". At the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes, Paris itself, as much as the commodity, was put on show. This text focuses on the Exhibition as a set of contesting representations of the modern city, stressing the importance of consumption and display for concepts of urban modernity. Here Le Corbusier's "Pavillon de L'Esprit Nouveau" with its "Plan Voisin" for the redesign of Paris confronted another equally up-to-date city - Paris "a woman's city", world centre of fashion and shopping. Taking as her starting point one of the most dramatic 1925 exhibits, the Rue des Boutiques which spanned the river Seine, the author analyzes the contemporary significance of the small Parisian luxury shop. She demonstrates how boutiques, conceived both as urbanism and as advertising, redefined Paris as the modern city. ;

        An der Grasnarbe

        Roman

        by Mirjam Wittig

        Jetzt hütet Noa also Schafe. Um ihren Angstattacken in der Großstadt zu entfliehen und aus Sehnsucht nach dem einfachen Leben,ist sie als freiwillige Helferin auf einen Hof nach Südfrankreich gekommen. Hier leben Ella, Gregor und ihre elfjährige Tochter Jade von ihrer Herde und dem, was sie auf den Äckern anbauen. Doch das wird immer beschwerlicher, die Sommer werden heißer. Auch Noa bemerkt die Risse im Boden und wie wenig Wasser der Fluss führt. Das Landleben zeigt sich nicht weniger aufreibend als Noas früheres Leben. Und in der Abgeschiedenheit der Berge holen sie auch die Ängste und inneren Widersprüche ein, mit denen sie bereits zuhause zu kämpfen hatte. In An der Grasnarbe treffen innere und äußere Landschaften aufeinander, die nicht nur durch die Klimakrise ins Wanken geraten. Mirjam Wittig erzählt davon mit großem Einfühlungsvermögen und starker atmosphärischer Kraft – als ob man die Berge und Täler vor sich sieht, die Schafsglocken hört, Trockenheit und Hitze auf der Haut spürt. Ein aufregendes Debüt!

        An der schönen blauen Donau

        Roman

        by Ludwig Bemelmans, Florian Sendtner, Florian Sendtner, Eva Demski

        April 1945: In New York erscheint ein Roman mit dem Titel The Blue Danube, der sofort Aufsehen erregt. Sein Verfasser war dreißig Jahre zuvor nach Amerika ausgewandert. Mit einer geradezu unglaublichen Präzision erzählt er vom Grauen des NS-Staats, vom Alltag des Terrors in der deutschen Provinz. Der Roman, von dem es bis heute keine deutsche Übersetzung gab, spielt 1944 und beginnt in einem Biergarten an der Donau, in dem sich Herr Stolz, der Gauleiter von Regensburg, über das Essen beklagt. Als er zu einer Kapuzinerpredigt über den Schwarzhandel anheben will, schreit jemand: "Ein Schwein!" In diesem Augenblick spaziert der Bürgermeister am Donaukai vorbei, doch es handelt sich um ein echtes Schwein, das mitten im Fluß auf einem Floß dahintreibt und schließlich auf einer Insel landet, die von den Fischers bewohnt wird, die hier den Regensburger Rettich anbauen. Die Insel ist "ein Stachel im Fleisch des Finanzamts", weil sie nirgends registriert ist, offiziell also gar nicht existiert. Vor allem aber erweisen sich die Inselbewohner nicht nur als eigensinnig, sondern auch als renitent gegenüber der Naziherrschaft.
