        You for Future

        by Franziska Wessel/ Günther Wessel

‘We will not stop demonstrating,’ writes Franziska Wessel in a guest column in the Berliner Zeitung. Franziska is pursuing a goal. Decisive measures must finally be taken to protect the climate. While that is not happening she spends every Friday on the streets, gives interviews and puts pressure on politicians. But climate change isn’t the only thing threatening our future. There is so much suffering, injustice and destruction in the world. Something must be done about it. And as a climate activist, Franziska knows exactly how to be active. Together with her father, the journalist and author, Günther Wessel, she explains: How do I start a petition? How do I organise a campaign? How does lobbying work? So that everyone knows how they can make things happen.

        Energy Future

        Fosils and Beyond

        by Moty Kuperberg

We cannot survive in a world where oil is $200 per barrel and where prices are dictated by a cartel and influenced by Wall Street. The free industrialized world, the glorious oil industry, and developed and developing countries have all fallen victim to greedy oil price crises. The worst year was 2008; our energy security, which the IEA defines as the “uninterrupted availability of energy sources at an affordable price,” was harmed. Yet the average price of crude oil in 2010–2014 was over $100 per barrel, only to sharply decline to $56 by the end of 2014, followed by a struggle to reach $50—a price which is considered "acceptable" by the industry. Energy Future puts the oil and gas industry’s past and present in context in order to introduce an alternative future. This future is based on three main pillars defined by the author as ENERGY GPS: geopolitics = accessible, prices = affordable, and supply = available.   Moty Kuperberg is a graduate of the department of Middle Eastern history at the University of Haifa (1984), and he holds a postgraduate degree in business administration and shipping from the City of London Polytechnic (1988). He has over twenty years of experience in shipping and energy, and during the last five years he has focused on his Independent Energy Security Agency (www.TheIESA.com) as a platform for improved global security of supply. An English-language eBook edition has been scheduled for fall  2017 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc.,CA.

The Future of Nuclear Power, Revised Edition

        by James A. Mahaffey, Ph.D.

Newly conceived, safer reactor designs are being built in the United States (and around the world) to replace the 104 obsolete operating nuclear power reactors in this country alone. The designs—which once seemed exotic and futuristic—are now 40 years old, and one by one these vintage Generation II plants will reach the end of productive service in the next 30 years. The Future of Nuclear Power, Revised Edition examines the advanced designs, practical concepts, and fully developed systems that have yet to be used. This eBook introduces readers to the traditional, American system of units, with some archaic terms remaining in use. Ideal for students and teachers interested in the technology of energy production in the next 100 years, this updated, full-color resource provides clear explanations of the terms and expressions used almost exclusively in nuclear science and the direction in which nuclear power is expected to go.

        Energy Future: Fossilien und mehr

        by Moty Kuperberg

        Whispering Leaves

by Rahlens, Holly-Jane / Übersetzt von Wasel, Ulrike; Übersetzt von Timmermann, Klaus

Generation Dark Winter: Living in a post-pandemic world.   The Whispering Leaves Reading Club is interrupted by a knock at the bookshop’s back door, in steps Colin from the distant future. It takes a while before he understands that he’s not in the middle of a virtual reality game, but has actually been sent back in time to the 21st century.   Oliver, Iris and Rosa decide to accompany him to find out if he is telling the truth. As soon as they arrive in the year 2273, the next surprise awaits: Evidently they have been tricked by the same people as Colin to follow him. The longer they stay the clearer it gets: Oliver Iris and Rosa are there to work as contemporary witnesses from a time before the Dark Winter, a pandemic which erased millions of lives and cultures in central Europe between the years 2018 and 2096.  If they stay the leading scientist promises them a vaccination, in return he asks them to help with some experiments. It is nearly too late when the children learn that staying means probably dying from time-gap disease, but returning to their families, facing the soon arriving catastrophe doesn’t seem to be much better. When Colin’s family helps them escape from the scientists headquarter, the time to decide finally arrives.   10+ years   “Rahlens makes no secret of her conviction about the healing power of reading: Stories awaken hope in us, again and again.” Süddeutsche Zeitung     English manuscripts is available!

        Next Rural Economies

Constructing Rural Place in Global Economies

by Neil Argent, Claire Aragau, Chris Bryant, Mary Cawley, Jean-Paul Charvet, Deborah Che, Owen Furuseth, Hugh Gayler, Lisa Harrington, Bruno Jean, Salma Loudiyi, Masatoshi Ouchi, Doug Ramsey, Bill Reimer, David Storey, Kelly Vodden, Nigel Walford, Mike Woods. Rural policy in industrialized countries is currently undergoing significant change. 'Place-based economies', where the unique attributes and assets of individual places determine their attractiveness for particular types of activities and investments, are increasingly important for rural development. The Next Rural Economies debates the future of rural development and highlights successes and failures to inform research, policy and community action. Case studies present discussions of the current state of rural community and economic restructuring and provide research and policy directions for constructing resilient and sustainable rural economies.

        Speculation by Commodity Index Funds

The Impact on Food and Energy Prices

by Scott H. Irwin, Dwight R. Sanders

Commodity futures prices exploded in 2007-08 and concerns about a new type of participant in commodity futures markets began to emerge. Market participants, regulators, and civic organizations began raising concerns that inflows from new "commodity index" investments were driving the increases in commodity prices instead of economic fundamentals. The main argument was that unprecedented buying pressure from these speculative long-only futures traders created massive bubbles that resulted in prices substantially exceeding fundamental value. At the time, it was not uncommon to link concerns about speculation and high prices to world hunger, food crises, and civil unrest. Naturally, this outcry resulted in numerous regulatory proposals to restrict speculation in commodity futures markets through transaction taxes, speculative position limits, and even the bizarre idea of a "virtual reserve" whereby a public agency would take futures positions opposite speculators. At the core, these assertions raised major economic questions about the efficiency of price discovery in commodity futures markets. Moreover, these so-called remedies did not come without a potential cost. Burdensome regulations would increase compliance and risk sharing costs across the global food system-lowering prices for producers and increasing costs to consumers. To guide this debate, a rigorous approach was needed to understand the dynamics between prices and commodity index activity. This book documents a curated selection of papers on the impact of index investment on commodity futures prices. The chronology of the papers roughly follows the timeline of our involvement in the world-wide debate about commodity speculation as it evolved after 2007. The 10 papers follow the evolving speculation debate with new author forwards highlighting the contribution and impact. Policy-makers, researchers, and market participants will find this not only as useful documentation of the debate; but, also a natural starting point when high commodity prices inevitably create the next speculation backlash.

The Forest of the Future – A New Reality

        Understanding the ecosystem

        by Hans Jürgen Böhmer

What happened with forest dieback? The predictions of the 1980s that forests would be in decline across Europe have not come true. Currently, attention again focuses on the doom scenarios of the loss of entire forests and cultural landscapes in an emotional and sometimes hysterical debate. Biogeographer Hans Jürgen Böhmer refers to updated case studies and his 30 years of research experience on global ecosystems to demonstrate extremely complex interrelations of the natural world that various actors monitor in contrasting ways and characterized by different times and ideologies. Böhmer advocates to embed the sustainability debate more strongly in the living environment, rather than relying exclusively on model calculations.
