Die berühmte Trilogie Arno Schmidts mit einem Nachwort von Hans-Ulrich TreichelDen im Jahr 1953 publizierten Kurzroman Aus dem Leben eines Fauns verstand Arno Schmidt als Einleitung einer mit Brand's Haide fortgesetzten und mit Schwarze Spiegel (beide 1951) abgeschlossenen Trilogie, die er 1963 unter dem Titel Nobodaddy's Kinder im Verbund publizierte. Für die Zeit vom totalen Krieg bis zum (imaginierten) Atomkrieg entfaltet der Autor ein giftiges Panorama des Kleinbürgergehabes. Der fünfzigjährige Düring registriert im ersten Roman kühl-präzise mit beißenden Kommentaren Verhalten und Meinungen der Menschen während der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft. Vor der kurzsichtigen Begeisterung seiner Kollegen bei Kriegsausbruch, vor der Dümmlichkeit seiner Vorgesetzten und vor seiner Frau, die den Sohn in den »Heldentod« treibt, zieht sich der »Faun« Düring in eine Blockhütte zurück – die ihn aber nicht vor dem Inferno bei einem Bombenangriff gegen Ende des Kriegs verschont. Brand's Haide setzt im Jahr 1946 ein mit dem Versuch eines Kriegsheimkehrers namens Schmidt, sich in einem Heidedorf anzusiedeln. Schwarze Spiegel schließlich beschwört die Zukunftsvision einer Welt, die 1955 von einem Atomkrieg vernichtet worden ist und den letzten überlebenden durch die Ruinen der untergegangenen Zivilisation streifen läßt.

Heinrich Düring, Gemeindebeamter in Fallingbostel, führt ein Doppelleben: Er verachtet das NS-Regime und den Alltag des deutschen Kleinbürgertums, nach außen aber gibt er sich angepasst. Seinen Ausgleich findet er in der Natur, durchstreift unermüdlich die geliebte Heidelandschaft, liest Wieland und Tieck. Im Wald entdeckt er eine Hütte und bezieht sie als Versteck für sich und seine jugendliche Geliebte. Im Spätsommer 1944 werden die beiden denunziert, doch ein Bombenangriff auf die benachbarte Munitionsfabrik kommt den polizeilichen Ermittlungen zuvor. Die Liebenden können fliehen, müssen aber ihre Hütte anzünden. Für ein paar Tage werden sie zusammen sein – ob sie den Krieg überleben, bleibt ungewiss.

Spenser's Una as the invisible Church

In this study, Kathryn Walls challenges the standard identification of Una with the post-Reformation English Church, arguing that she is, rather, Augustine's City of God - the invisible Church, whose membership is known only to God. Una's story (its Tudor resonances notwithstanding) therefore embraces that of the Synagogue before the Incarnation as well as that of the Church in the time of Christ and thereafter. It also allegorises the redemptive process that sustains the true Church. Una is fallible in canto I. Subsequently, however, she comes to embody divine perfection. Her transformation depends upon the intervention of the lion as Christ. Convinced of the consistency and coherence of Spenser's allegory, Walls offers fresh interpretations of Abessa (as Synagoga), of the fauns and satyrs (the Gentiles), and of Una's dwarf (adiaphoric forms of worship). She also reinterprets Spenser's marriage metaphor, clarifying the significance of Red Cross as Una's spouse in the final canto.
