        The Siege of Qikou

        by Zhu Xiuhai

The Siege of Qikou has mainly narrated that Cheng Jinyuan, president of Northwestern Shanxi Chamber of Commerce, had been led to the cusp of historical changes to fight bravely together with local people during 1936 to 1949. Cheng Qianzhi, the oldest son of Cheng Jinyuan, was sent by Yan Xishan there to serve as a battalion commander of the Shanxi and Suiyuan Army, while Cheng Chongzhi, his second son, was assigned by The Communist Party of China to build the primary-level organizations of the Party in his hometown. Qikou had been under the siege of Japanese invaders for three times which had made Qikou the scene of fierce fighting. After suffering tremendous sacrifice, Cheng Jinyuan, who had been mistrustful of CPC before, had gradually realized that CPC had and would always unite closely with the masses and march forward with no fear of sacrifice which might be the reason that CPC was far stronger than Yan Xishan or Chiang Kai-shek. Together with his fellow citizens, he had firmly supported CPC and devoted all himself to the cause of national liberation through arduous struggle and sacrifice, displaying an epic of heroism to a large extent. The novel is full of twists and turns and quite readable by successively demonstrating the front-line battlefield and the espionage war. Set in the anti-Japanese war period, the novel has vividly discussed the three effective weapons of CPC to fight against the enemies: the united front, the armed struggle and the building of the Party, and stressed the formation and historical importance of the united front.

Treating the People as His Mirror, a Man of Sincerity—Zhang Lan

        by Zhao Zunsheng

Based on the life of Mr. Zhang Lan and supplemented by reasonable literary imagination, this book vividly depicts the magnificent life course of a democratic revolutionary, patriot and educator. He served as a governor of Sichuan Province, hosted the Morning Post and supported the New Culture Movement. As the president of Chengdu University, he adhered to the principle of inclusiveness, insisted on meritocracy and advocated ideological and academic freedom. He participated in the initiation and the organization of the China Democratic Political League, wrote China Needs Real Democracy, exposing the feigned democracy and real dictatorship of the Kuomintang. On the eve of liberation, he was unexpectedly imprisoned in Hongqiao Sanatorium because of his support to the Communist Party of China (CPC) and was nearly drowned by the Kuomintang. He served as vice chairman of the Central People's Government of New China and the first chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League. In his life, Zhang Lan was "a man of sincerity". He loved his nation and country, treated the people as his mirror, and always stood in line with the CPC. The book not only vividly describes Zhang Lan's sincere friendship with Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Huang Yanpei and others, and his head-to-head confrontation with Chiang Kai-shek, Duan Qirui and Yang Sen, but also vividly portrays minor characters such as Qiu Yichun, Song Lanying, little Zhang Lun. The rich plot, the exquisite writing style and closeness to life can give readers a "talk" with Zhang Lan in the present and personally feel Zhang Lan's patriotic and progressive life.

Catalogs for Metals and Related Remains from Ban Chiang, Ban Tong, Ban Phak Top, and Don Klang

by Edited by Joyce C. White and Elizabeth G. Hamilton

Scholars of ancient metallurgy gain insights from individual artifacts as well as from synthetic overviews because debates can turn on details of particular objects from particular contexts. Therefore, it is important for archaeometallurgical studies to provide comprehensive catalogs that specify the attributes of individual objects as well as contexts and the technical studies undertaken on those objects. This fourth volume in the series is devoted to presenting the metallurgical evidence from Ban Chiang, Ban Tong, Ban Phak Top, and Don Klang in northeast Thailand in the form of detailed catalogs organized by sites, periods, and artifact types. All metal artifacts, metallic by-products, and crucibles from the four-site study are included. A catalog of analyzed prills is also included. The catalogs summarize all the contextual, metric, and analytical data from metallographic, elemental, and microhardness analyses. Illustrations and photomicrographs provide visual evidence for the study collection. These kinds of detailed catalogs form the raw material of technical and archaeological interpretation, enabling comparisons with other collections as well as allowing scholars to form their own conclusions independently of the interpretations of the authors.

        REVENGE OF THE GENERALISSIMO

        by Tang Chen-Wei

        * The Weeping Angels of Dr. Who get a Taiwanese facelift, with zombies thrown in for good measure * Adapted into comic book Does the Generalissimo Dine on Human Flesh? President and generalissimo of Taiwan for decades, Chiang Kai-Shek is honored with bronze statues that occupy nearly every school, park, and public square on the island. But when the statues are toppled as a form of protest, the horrifying paranormal creatures that inhabit them are awakened!   Recently unemployed, Liu Shih-Yen is convinced by an old colleague to join a metaphysical workshop. Guided by the workshop leader, Liu Shih-Yen has a near-death experience involving a vision of a bronze statue rushing towards him. Watching the news at home after class, he sees an old veteran protesting the removal of a Chiang Kai-shek statue from a park — not on the grounds that the Generalissimo was a great man who should be honored, but due to his belief that something malevolent resides inside the statues.   After series of paranormal incidents, Liu Shih-Yen decides he must visit the park from the news story. There, he finally catches a glimpse of the horrific creatures that animate the bronze statues. Fainting in terror, he enters another visionary trance. Now convinced that knowledge of the creatures’ existence is being publicly suppressed, Liu Shih-Yen joins a secret organization that is working to understand and eliminate the paranormal threat. While they succeed in halting the first wave of attacks, a second wave takes them by surprise, unleashing an entire army of Bronze Generalissimos on Taiwan’s unsuspecting population!   The author’s inspiration for these unique monsters came from a common legend in Taiwan — that if you watch closely, you can catch the statues of Chiang Kai-shek blinking! Operating on multiple levels, Revenge of the Generalissimo provides thrills and entertainment, while also serving as a vehicle for the complex emotions surrounding one of Taiwan’s most divisive historical figures.

        The Piano Tuner

        by Kuo Chiang-Sheng(Johnny Kuo)

“In the beginning, we were souls without bodies.” When God planned to give us souls a physical shape, souls lost freedom forever.   Our protagonist is a piano tuner with an extraordinary musical gift. Not only does he possess a mastery over musicality and pitch, he is also able to distinguish the distinct characteristics of each piano. A chance encounter in his teen derails the dreams of becoming a professional pianist, leaving him stuck in time against the memories of what has been lost – he is now over forty, unkept, and lacks achievement of any kind.   A grieving businessman of over sixty meets the tuner when he is left behind a piano by his wife. The pair become business partners with the plan of dealing second-hand pianos – they embark on a journey to locate a piano in New York.   As the journey unfolds, the tuner comes to understand the twists and turns of a love story that is hidden out of sight under the elegant sound of the piano: the love of an older man and his young wife – their love tested against the trials and tribulations of life. He learns that there is a universality to the secrets hidden behind each narrative of love, whether it is between teachers and students, husband and wife, and even in friendship.   Their final destination is an old piano cemetery, a whole field of bare, stripped, and abandoned piano remains. This evokes an emotional response from the tuner, as he recognizes it as a dark parallel to the final ruins of emotions.    THE PIANO TUNER utilizes musical stories from history, such as Rachmaninoff, Schubert, Richter, and Gould to represent the characters’ thoughts in the story. Kuo Chiang-Sheng’s extensive research is evident: from Richter, the second-hand piano distribution center in Manhattan, to the piano tuner profession, etc. all are set against the sound and backdrop of the everchanging, contemporary media age.   Everyone has an innate program for resonance. Some find it in musical instruments, some in singing, while some are more fortunate to find a vibration amid the world, awakening resonance between the past, present, and future. The novel tells a story of sound and emotion, and the medium of communication between the two is the piano. A book filled with sorrow and temperance, Kuo Chiang-Sheng’s first foray into musical fiction leaves one breathless with praise.
