A Case Study of Bt Maize in Kenya

by Edited by Angelika Hilbeck, David A. Andow

International forums have identified the need for comprehensive, transparent, scientific methods, for the pre-release testing and post-release monitoring of transgenic plants to ensure environmental safety. There is also wide recognition that the regulatory and scientific capacity for conducting these types of assessments needs to be strengthened. In response to these requirements, a GMO Guidelines Project was established - under the aegis of the International Organization for Biological Control - to develop biosafety testing guidelines for transgenic plants. This book is one of the first outputs from this project. The book aims, using the case study of Bt maize, to detail generic approaches to the evaluation of environmental impact of GM technologies. This book focuses on transgenic maize in Kenya. This maize includes genetic material derived from the bacterium, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), which naturally produces proteins that are toxic to some insects. The book explores both the environmental and agricultural impacts of transgenic plants. It draws out general risk assessment guidelines, and demonstrates the need for case-by-case analysis. Although focused on Kenya and Bt Maize, the book's findings and recommendations are relevant and applicable to a multitude of nations and GM crops.

Desert Passions – Wilde Liebe im Sinai

        by Robert Bettelheim

326 Seiten, 14 x 20,5 cm.

        Zero O'Clock

        by C.J. Farley

In early March 2020 in New Rochelle, New York, teenager Geth Montego is fumbling with the present and uncertain about her future. She only has three friends: her best friend Tovah, who’s been acting weird ever since they started applying to college; Diego, who she wants to ask to prom; and the K-pop band BTS, because the group always seems to be there for her when she needs them (at least in her head). She could use some help now. Geth’s small city becomes one of the first COVID-19 containment zones in the US. As her community is upended by the virus and stirred up by the growing Black Lives Matter protests, Geth faces a choice and a question: Is she willing to risk everything to fight for her beliefs? And if so, what exactly does she believe in? C.J. Farley captures a moment in spring 2020 no teenager will ever forget. It sucks watching the world fall apart. But sometimes you have to start from zero.

Genetically Modified Crops in Asia Pacific

by Govind T Gujar, Andi Trisyono, Mao Chen

Meeting future food needs without compromising environmental integrity is a central challenge for agriculture globally but especially for the Asia Pacific region - where 60% of the global population, including some of the world's poorest, live on only 30% of the land mass. To guarantee the food security of this and other regions, growers worldwide are rapidly adopting genetically modified (GM) crops as the forerunner to protect crops against many biotic and abiotic stresses, with 444 million acres produced globally in 2015. Asia Pacific countries play an important role in this, with India, China and Pakistan appearing in the top 10 countries with acreage of GM crops. Genetically Modified Crops in Asia Pacific discusses the progress of GM crop adoption across the Asia Pacific region over the past decade, including research, development, adoption and sustainability, as well as the development and cultivation of insect protective Bt brinjal, drought-tolerant sugarcane, biotech rice, late blight resistant potato and Golden Rice. Regulatory efforts of developed and developing Asia Pacific member nations to ensure the safety of GM crops to both humans and the environment are also outlined and discussed. The authors also probe into some aspects of gene editing and nanobiotechnology to provide context for criticisms of GM crops regarding its alleged ill effects on human health and the environment. Genetically Modified Crops in Asia Pacific provides a comprehensive reference not only for academics and researchers in crop systems but also policy makers in the Asia Pacific region. Beyond this region, readers will benefit from understanding how GM crops have been integrated into many different countries and, in particular, the effects of the take up of GM cropping systems by farmers with different socioeconomic backgrounds. G. T. Gujar has an MS and PhD in Entomology from the IARI and was a Marie Curie EU postdoctoral fellow in UK and Germany. He is currently associated with South Asia Biotechnology Centre, New Delhi. Y. Andi Trisyono is a Professor of Entomology in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Gadjah Mada in Indonesia. He earned his MS and PhD in Entomology from Michigan State University and University of Missouri, respectively. Mao Chen has an MS and PhD in Entomology from Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China, and is currently working as head of market development field-testing at APAC Bayer Crop Science in Singapore.

        The Bureau of Transportation Statistics

        Priorities for the Future

by Constance F. Citro and Janet L. Norwood, Editors; Panel on Statistical Programs and Practices of the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, National Research Council

How can the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), the nation's newest federal statistical agency, contribute to the work of the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)? What is the appropriate role for such an agency as a part of a major department? BTS was authorized in 1991 by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) in recognition of the need for more and better data for transportation officials at local, state, and federal levels. While the USDOT has many long-standing data collection programs for particular transportation modes (highways, rail, air, etc.), it has never had a statistical agency with a mandate to improve the quality and relevance of transportation data for important system-wide, cross-modal analyses of the nation's transportation system. This book examines how BTS can provide statistical leadership for USDOT, define and maintain quality standards for transportation data, and improve data documentation. It considers BTS's role in developing national transportation indicators, coordinating data collection throughout USDOT, filling gaps, identifying user needs, and developing analysis programs for transportation data. Anyone concerned with having high-quality, relevant transportation indicators and other data available for policy planning, evaluation, and research will be interested in this book, as will students of effective government.

Security Testing Handbook for Banking Applications

by Arvind Doraiswamy, Sangita Pakala, Nilesh Kapoor, Prashant Verma, Praveen Singh, Raghu Nair and Shalini Gupta

Address human vulnerabilities with this essential guide … Practical advice from an acknowledged expert – endorsed by BT! Your business information is likely to be much more valuable than the hardware on which it is stored. The loss of a laptop might set you back £400, but if the files on the laptop included sensitive customer data or the blueprint for a new product, the cost of repairing the damage would run into thousands. The consequences of a data breach range from alienating customers to heavy fines, or even criminal prosecution. While technologies, such as antivirus software and encryption, can offer some protection against cybercrime, security breaches are most often the result of human error and carelessness. Improve information security Improving information security within your organisation, therefore, has to encompass people and processes, as well as technology. Motivating your team and making them more aware of security concerns should be at the heart of your information security strategy. At the same time, the processes you have in place to address information security issues need to be straightforward and properly understood if you want your employees to adhere to them. BT’s approach This pocket guide is based on the approach used by BT to protect its own data security – one that draws on the capabilities of both people and technology. The guide will prove invaluable for IT managers, information security officers and business executives.

        Key Transportation Indicators

        Summary of a Workshop

by Janet Norwood and Jamie Casey, Editors, National Research Council

A transportation indicator is a measure of change over time in the transportation system or in its social, economic, environmental, or other effects. Two National Research Council (NRC) studies recommended, as a matter of high priority, that the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) in the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) develop a consistent, easily understood, and useful set of key indicators of the transportation system. The NRC's Committee on National Statistics and its Transportation Research Board, which conducted these studies, convened a workshop on June 13, 2000. The purpose of the Workshop on Transportation Indicators was to discuss issues relating to transportation indicators and provide the Bureau of Transportation Statistics with new ideas for issues to address.
