        Death and security

Memory and mortality at the bombsite

by Charlotte Heath-Kelly. Series edited by Peter Lawler, Emmanuel Pierre Guittet

Making a bold intervention into critical security studies literature, this book explores the ontological relationship between mortality and security. It considers the mortality theories of Heidegger and Bauman alongside literature from the sociology of death, before undertaking a comparative exploration of the memorialisation of four prominent post-terrorist sites: the World Trade Centre in New York, the Bali bombsite, the London bombings and the Norwegian sites attacked by Anders Breivik. By interviewing the architects and designers of these reconstruction projects, the book shows that practices of memorialisation are a retrospective security endeavour - they conceal and re-narrate the traumatic incursion of death. Disaster recovery is replete with security practices that return mortality to its sublimated position and remove the disruption posed by mortality to political authority. The book will be of significant interest to academics and postgraduates working in the fields of critical security studies, memory studies and international politics.

        IT’S OUR FUTURE

THE YOUNG FEMALE REBELS CHANGING OUR WORLD

        by Bettina Weiguny

Greta Thunberg is not alone: there is now a worldwide movement. Young female rebels are taking to the world stage. They are campaigning for clean drinking water, opposing the gun lobby, mobilising against child marriage and child labour. In order to achieve their goals, they are speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, at the Economic Forum in Davos, at climate conferences or at the "March for Our Lives" in Washington. Their influence is immense; a single speech can shake global corporations such as Siemens. Behind the young activists, just a Tweet away, stands a whole generation. The book introduces the key players, for example Emma González and the Indonesian sisters, 10 and 12 years old, who managed to bring about the prohibition of single use plastic on Bali, but it also follows up the fundamental issues: who brings them out onto the streets, what motivates them?

        Glück ist ein vorübergehender Schwächezustand

        Erzählung

        by Tankred Dorst, Ursula Ehler

        World Heritage Sites

Tourism, Local Communities and Conservation Activities

        by Takamitsu Jimura

Heritage is a growing area of both tourism and study, with World Heritage Site designations increasing year-on-year. This book reviews the important interrelations between the industry, local communities and conservation work, bringing together the various opportunities and challenges for different destinations. World Heritage status is a strong marketing brand, and proper heritage management and effective conservation are vital, but this tourism must also be developed and managed appropriately if it is to benefit a site. As many sites are located in residential areas, their interaction with the local community must also be carefully considered. This book: - Reviews new areas of development such as Historic Urban Landscapes, Intangible Cultural Heritage, Memory of the World and Global Geoparks. - Includes global case studies to relate theory to practice. - Covers a worldwide industry of over 1,000 cultural and natural heritage sites. An important read for academics, researchers and students of heritage studies, cultural studies and tourism, this book is also a useful resource for professionals working in conservation, cultural and natural heritage management.

        Bali

by Laura Roncallo - Illustrator: Defe (Alessio Defendini)

In this high format travel diary, Defe invites readers to an artistic trip to Bali. Far from the beaten tracks, Defe goes into the details. His work as a plastic artist and illustrator gets closer to a Séraphine de Senlis or to an artist from Vuitton’s Travel Book collection. Going to Bali is a dream for many of us but the other side of the coin lies in the difficulties of waste management. The author Laura Roncallo particularly singles out to the plastic and discharges at sea. She puts herself in the shoes of a white monkey (mythical character) and in the last part of the book, stigmatizes those responsible for this ecological tragedy. Defe represents with a vivid color palette and in his own, very recognizable style the lush jungle and wild animals. His talent as a naturalist artist makes this work exceptional. Globale Nomaden - Süden

        Drogenschmuggel übers Mittelmeer

        by Hubertus Becker

        Cuentos XMAS

by Seb Doubinsky, Matilda Braxton-Bali, Martín Lombardo, Marina López Planella, Ángel Loureiro, Ana Jaka, Rafael Sáenz de Cabezón

How to read XMAS in Spanish? X more? Ksmas? Chmas? And what do we understand when we actually read it? XMAS Stories groups seven Christmas-themed stories with X themes: an unknown, a prohibition, something with pornographic content, an indeterminacy, a substitution, a Roman numeral ... All those "X" themes in a "mas" "más" version. Some of the inhabitants of this space are: an individual who flees from the cold in search of healing human warmth; a sixty-year-old in love with the Magi; a friar who finds peace lecturing a community of settlers and indigenous people; an “it” girl housewife on the boil before her Christmas party preparations; a Santa Claus by accident, the protagonist of an untraditional tale; a young woman thirsty for a good love story; and a resident of the Big Apple hungry for Christmas revenge. The characters and voices in these stories, framed in a festive and celebratory atmosphere, and sheltered by everything that Christmas supposedly entails, propose heterodox realities as the only way to a new birth.
