The Fungi As Pathogenic and Beneficial Microbes

        by Suresh G. Borkar

The fungi as microbe is present everywhere; in mountains and soil crust; in water and water bodies like rivers, oceans, lakes, ponds and glaciers; on plant surfaces, food grains, fruits and vegetables; on de-composting materials; on fabrics and leather in damp weather; air cooling systems; in environmental air outside and inside homes; on animals and human body parts etc. The well develop fungal growth can be seen with naked eyes on some of the material, while the fungal structures are only visible in microscope. These fungal microbe are harmful as pathogens to cause diseases in crop plants, food product, fruits and vegetables, in human being, animals, birds and marine wealth etc. However, some of the fungal species are beneficial to mankind, agriculture and environment. These are sources of food products, antibiotics, enzymes, organic acids, plant nutrient supplier, composting agents, biological control agents and so on. Most of us are unaware of all these facts about this fungal microbe, as this knowledge is not yet passed on to the generations although they play important role in our life at one or other point of time. It is a high time for all of us to know about this fungal microbe and the role they play in our life.

Félix au musée du corps humain

by Dre Nicole Audet, M.D.

        Geomatics in Tsunami

by SM. Ramasamy, C.J.Kumanan, BRIG. R.Sivakumar & Bhoop Singh

The Asian "Mega Tsunami" (2004) has struck most of the territorial nations of South Asia including the East Coast of India. The NRDMS Division, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, New Delhi, has conceived and executed on All India Co-ordinated Programme on "Tsunami Disaster Assessment and Mitigation" through various institutions of expertise on Geomatics in Earth System Dynamics and the related natural disasters. The Geomatics technology which includes Arial Photography, Photogrammetry, Satellite Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing, GPS Surveys, GIS modeling etc. was used in this programme, geo-spatial data bases were created on Tsunami disasters over Natural, Physical and Human Resources and futuristic mitigation strategies were evolved there from. The book illuminates the results of the studies carried out along the Indian Coast and a birds eye view on the tsunami studies in Norway. In addition, some special papers on the role of mangroves as Tsunami mitigator, Impacts o Tsunami over marine water quality, coral ecosystem etc; the administrators experience over the tsunami crisis management, NGOs perspective, certain societal issues triggered by the killer Tsunami and citizens perspective, etc. also find a place in this volume.

Geomatics in Energy and Water Resources

by SM. Ramasamy & S.Thillai Govindarajan

Due to unprecedented growth in population and the resultant massive mining of energy resources, especially the non-renewable resources and also water resources, these resources have gradually become scarce commodities. Hence the geoscientists and the technocrats from all over the world have embarked into many fold research programmes for locating newer reservoirs of these resources and also to develop models to conserve and sustainably exploit them. remoAs this involves the total understanding of the rock types, tectonic architecture, geomorphology and reservoir conditions, the Geomatics technology comprising Remote Sensing, Geographic Information System (GIS), etc have been found to be vital tools in the inventory and management of these resources; While the former due to its synoptivity, multispectral nature and repeativity and the latter by virtue of its capability to store, manipulate and model huge volume of spatial and non-spatial data. Divergent geological provinces and processes are brought out deserving concepts and methods on geology, 3D visualization of subsurface lineaments, SRTM based lineament mapping, spatio-linear modeling of hard rock aquifer systems, 3D visualization of oil bearing structures, etc., both as field geologists and as researchers.

        Oceanic

        by Yolanda González

A right whale is beached on the Basque coastline on the eve of the G7 Summit held in Biarritz in August of 2019. An environmental journalist is knocked down by the whale’s final fin thrash while she is covering the news story. The event is politically suspicious because various clues point to a sabotage operation orchestrated by anti-system groups gathered in Hendaya to protest the summit. The whale’s cadaver becomes the awkward guest at political meeting, adding tension to an already fraught social situation marked by the crisis and the continuing protested by the Yellow Vests.   In parallel, in the Spain of King Philip II, a group of Basque whalers prepare for the great transatlantic expedition in search of whale oil, the essential fuel for the development of the civilized world. Men die at sea and women confront the human drama with their own weapons while the city of Bayonne is decorated for the celebration of the meeting between the two great European monarchies.     The very same ocean that served as the hatchery for budding empires, today is agonizing in full view of the Group of Seven. The gazes of Elizabeth of Valois, Catherine de Medici, and their courts blend into the gazes of Macron, Trump, and the other world leaders. Outside, the streets are filled with screaming protestors. The whales advance toward them, special guests to the powerful party. Five centuries separate the two great political meetings: the Biarritz G7 Summit focused on inequality and climate change, and the 1565 Bayonne meeting for peace between the peoples of the Spanish and French crowns.   Using elements from the ecothriller, historical fic3on, and poli3cal sa3re, the novel Oceanic blends different 3me periods and narra3ve voices, making nature a leading character.

        Food Microbiology

        by Ramanathan, N.

Food microbiology is a branch of applied microbiology and the scope of food microbiology is expanding rapidly to protect food from microbial spoilage and provide safe, nutritious food to consumers. We now live in a period of worldwide food crisis, a food saved is a food produced. The book embodies twenty chapters covering the types and sources of microorganisms in food, factors influencing microbial growth in foods; Preservation of food by high temperature, low temperature, dehydration, osmotic pressure, irradiation, high pressure processing, chemical preservatives, food storage and packaging; Food safety and quality management, fermented food products, dairy microbiology, microbial foods and chemicals, mushroom cultivation, and microbial enzymes. Bacterial food poisoning, mycotoxin and impact of genetically modified foods with descriptive and objective questions. In addition, procedures for fifteen practical experiments in food and dairy microbiology and glossary are included.
