      The Outline of China’s Economics

      by Lin XIAO,Heng QUAN

This book makes base on the development experience of China's 40 years reform and opening-up, with the requirements of "New Experience and New Theory" embodied, and the book tries to set up the theoretical logic and practical framework of China's economic development, that is, the Outline of China’s Economics. This book argues that the Outline of China's Economics highlights economic reform and development with the four-dimensional unity, which is "institution-structure-government-growth", and its historical track. "Institution" reflects the fundamental direction of the market-oriented system innovation in the primary stage of socialism, revealing the fundamental system reform with transition of resource allocation mode and the improvement of economic growth efficiency in China's economic development. "Structure" reflects the direction of the industrialization, urbanization and information development, revealing the issue of the goal of modernization development for China's economic development. "Growth" reflects the integrated driving forces of China's market-oriented allocation of resources, industrialization strategy (especially for manufacturing sector), urbanization strategy and informatization strategy which ensures the inherent inevitability of China's economic catch-up growth, and it also means that the internal impetus and law of China's high-speed catch-up as a great economy. The model of China's economic growth is such a theoretical logic and practice process of "institutional innovation-structural change-government promotion-economic growth". Corresponding to this development practice and the theory logic, the outline of China’s Economics should revolve around analytical frame of "institution-structure-government-growth". Such an analytical framework is helpful to enrich, innovate and develop the political and economic system of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

      Phuro

      by Veijo O. Baltzar

The book begins with the author’s introduction and his vision about the origin of the Gypsies. Born from a mare, a dark and temperamental young man encounters prejudices and persecution everywhere due to his different looks and character. People start calling him a Gypsy with the intention of insulting him. But over time the young man starts to love the name ‘Gypsy’ – it begins to sound beautiful to him and so he makes it the core of his identity. The first Gypsy bears children and thus the Gypsy people and nation are born. To his descendants he becomes Phuro, the authority and leader of all Gypsies. In the novel itself, Phuro appears as the mythical ancestor who laid down the laws, traditions and spiritual basis of the Gypsies and their customs, which are either respected and followed or transgressed. The novel tells the story of two families living in a big city that has recently been ravaged by war. From the Gypsy perspective, the city is ruled by the aged Roma patriot Mofal and his younger brother Marfalo. As the eldest son, Mofal is in the position of the leader of the family and the clans, despite the city being divided equally between the two brothers. The children of Marfalo and Mofal grow up together. Mofal and Marfalo’s eldest sons, Carajan and Zoran, call themselves blood brothers. The Gypsy quarter, the area surrounding the market square of the city, has traditionally been a common territory, but this soon begins to change. In order to secure Carajan’s future, Mofal intends to gift him this part of the town, which is the best area for livelihoods and trade. This leads to dissatisfaction among Marfalo’s family. For Zoran, Carajan now appears as an insurmountable competitor. The relations between the cousins become tense, which further erodes relations between the brothers Mofal and Marfalo. The situation is not made any easier by the fact that Carajan and his cousin Gimara are falling in love with each other. In addition to the inappropriateness of being close relatives, they represent the most powerful families in the Roma tribe, making their relationship unacceptable in the eyes of the Roma. Zoran tells Carajan to leave his sister alone and with his mother they try to get Gimara to marry Bagro, the son of rich Fargo - the king of cards who runs a casino in the port of the city. Fargo represents “new status”, with wealth but no real authority within the community. A battle of power, conspiration and plotting takes place among the Gypsies of the city, escalating into a fateful and irreversible series of events. Employing its large gallery of characters, the novel introduces the whole spectrum of Roma culture with its multiple levels and hierarchies. Phuro concentrates on depicting the process of change that takes place when the new and old cultures meet; when the relationship with one’s own tradition disintegrates, and greed and envy take over.

      In Love and War

      by Veijo O. Baltzar

Life is busy in a big European city in the late 1930s, where Dromal, the head of his tribe, runs a wide range of business activities that aren’t always above board. It is not only his tribe who benefits from his operations, but also many leading citizens of the city. Dromal’s tribe lives in an old, abandoned warehouse area on the outskirts of the city. His son Girin has begun to live in a wrecked car behind the bus station after having taken the outspoken widow, Fudurni, as his wife, despite the lack of acceptance by his community. The main characters of the novel are the people of Dromal’s tribe, his daughter Ginarel and Kastalo, an orphan pickpocket raised on the streets. The poor and rootless Kastalo is not good enough to be a fiancé for the Gypsy princess Ginarel. Nonetheless, Kastalo has fallen for the girl. Preparations are underway for the wedding of Ginarel and Bustan. Bustan is the son of the highly regarded blacksmith Joralo. Along with Bustan, Girin is given the responsibility to watch over his sister and to protect her from trouble and shame. When Kastalo’s infatuation is noticed, the boys come up with a way to benefit from the pickpocket. When the Gypsies become the targets of the suffering caused by the emerging Nazi regime and its sadism, the prevailing relations of power within the tribe are put to a test. Emotions smoulder under the surface, people take measures as the Gypsies flee the ominous signs. The tribe’s long and troubled journey makes a man out of Kastalo; the former selfish thief grows into a young, responsible, respectful and unfailing member of the tribe. The love Ginarel cherishes for Kastalo is evident, but can it ever be fulfilled?
