      Seismic Isolation Strategies for Earthquake-Resistant Construction

      Earthquakes are catastrophic events that cause huge economic losses due to the vulnerability of the existing building stock. However, collapses of vulnerable buildings can be avoided if preventative measures, such as enhancement of their earthquake resistance, are implemented on time. This book will allow the reader to become acquainted with a number of unique, modern and cost-effective seismic isolation strategies, which can be easily, and in very short periods of time, and without interruption of the use of the buildings, implemented with high efficiency in existing buildings, making them earthquake proof. An important aspect here is that the book’s seismic isolation strategies are demonstrated on real examples of existing buildings with different structural systems, such as reinforced concrete frame buildings with shear walls and stone buildings with load-bearing walls. The cost-effectiveness of the suggested strategies is further proved by comparative analyses carried out for buildings both with and without seismic isolation systems.

It also offers extensive numerical analysis, which reveals both advantages and drawbacks of the approach.       Tribology is usually defined as "the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion". It includes the research and application of principles of friction, wear, lubrication and design. Green tribology involves tribological aspects of environmental and biological impacts. This multidisciplinary field of science and technology is very important for the development of new products in mechanics, materials, chemistry, life sciences and by extension for all modern industry. The current volume aims to provide recent information on progress in green tribology. Chapter 1 provides information on tribological materials (an eco-sustainable perspective), while chapter 2 is dedicated to preparation and tribology performance of bio-based ceramic particles from rice waste and chapter 3 describes tribological behavior and tribochemistry of Ti3SiC2 in water and alcohols. Chapter 4 contains information on modelling and analysis of the oil-film pressure of a hydrodynamic journal bearing lubricated by nano based bio-lubricants using a D-optimal design.
