Behaviour and Welfare of the Horse

        by Andrew F Fraser

Horses play a unique role in human activities, for both work and recreation. From the ranch to the racetrack, an understanding of horses' behaviour and needs is vital for man to ensure their well-being. Providing a comprehensive, scientific overview of horse behaviour and its relation to welfare, this new, updated edition includes new developments in the understanding of the relationship between physiology and performance, and the neuro-chemical basis of stereotypic behaviour. It has been expanded to address the important topic of welfare from both a fundamental and a practical viewpoint, and will serve as an essential resource for veterinarians, equine professionals and horse owners as well as students of veterinary and animal sciences.

        Stereotypic Animal Behaviour

        Fundamentals and Applications to Welfare

by Edited by Georgia Mason, Jeffrey Rushen.

This second edition is a complete re-write of the 1st edition published in 1993 (editors Lawrence and Rushen). It reflects many recent advances, bringing together all new chapters and over 30 contributors. Abnormal behaviour patterns, from the jumping and somersaulting of caged laboratory mice to the pacing of enclosed 'big cats', are displayed by many millions of farm, zoo, research and companion animals. This book focuses on the causation and treatment of these environment-induced stereotypic behaviours, and their implications for animal welfare and normalcy of brain functioning. The first section takes an ethological perspective, focusing on the constraints captivity places on animals' normal behavioural repertoires, and the effects these have on specific motivational systems. The second section addresses the role of dysfunction, particularly the impact of chronic stress and impoverished environments on brain functioning. The third section looks at how stereotypic behaviours can be tackled, once they have emerged, using diverse techniques from environmental enrichment to pharmaceutical intervention. The volume ends with a synthesis, a suggested new definition for 'stereotypic behaviour', and a discussion of future research directions. This book will be of significant interest to researchers and advanced students in animal behaviour and welfare, animal and veterinary science, comparative psychology, and neuroscience.

        Stereotypic Animal Behaviour

        Fundamentals and Applications to Welfare

by Edited by Georgia Mason, Jeffrey Rushen

This 2nd edition is a complete re-write of the 1st edition in 1993. It reflects developments in knowledge since the 1st edition and includes many new chapters and contributors. Concern over the welfare of confined animals is continuing to increase and extends not only to farm and zoo animals, but also to laboratory and companion animals. This book focuses on environmentally induced stereotypes, rather than drug induced or neurologically based stereotypes and discusses why captive animals perform these stereotypes. It also examines what this behaviour can tell us about animal welfare, options for prevention and cure and assesses future research directions and implications for animal welfare.

        Practical Canine Behaviour

        For Veterinary Nurses and Technicians

        by Stephanie Hedges

There have been ground-breaking advances in our understanding of canine behaviour in recent years. Traditional theories, based on the premise that a desire to be ‘pack leader’ drives all dog behaviour, have made way for a new and fascinating insight into the subtleties and complexities of canine communication, social behaviour and emotional drives. Keeping abreast of such developments is becoming increasingly essential for veterinary nurses and technicians, both to fulfil client expectations and to protect canine welfare. Yet current training worldwide typically offers little teaching in this area. In this book Stephanie Hedges draws on more than 20 years as a practicing veterinary nurse and her specialist knowledge as a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CCAB) to provide a quick reference and practically relevant canine behaviour resource to meet the specific needs of the general practice nurse or technician. Contents include: *An introduction to the drives for, management and modification of canine behaviour *New approaches to handling and interaction to improve safety, efficiency and patient welfare *Essential advice for puppy owners and key aspects of running safe in house puppy socialisation classes *Guidance on how to manage the behavioural impact of illness and life changes, and address fear of fireworks and visiting the practice *Client factsheets and behaviour assessment questionnaire *Flow charts for when and where to refer dogs showing problem behaviour

        The Behavioural Biology of Chickens

        by Christine J Nicol

Chickens are by far the world’s most widely farmed animal, kept for both meat and egg production. They are at the centre of many debates regarding housing and production systems, causing significant interest in what lies behind chicken behaviour. This accessible book covers sensory biology, behavioural development, preferences and aversions, social behaviour, learning and cognition, behavioural issues in different systems and solutions for behavioural problems. Authored by an authority on chicken ethology, it brings together the fields of animal behaviour, neuroscience, psychology and epidemiology to provide a comprehensive understanding of chicken behaviour and help improve the lives of farmed chickens around the world.
