      Fast Facts: Breast Cancer

by Jayant S Vaidya, David Joseph

Wherever you are in your career, and whatever involvement you have with caring for women with breast cancer, the fifth edition of Fast Facts: Breast Cancer has something for you. The world-class authors of this popular fact-packed handbook provide practical advice on all the key areas of breast cancer management, from risk factors and diagnosis to treatment of all cancer stages. But what really makes it stand out from the crowd is the authors' awareness of the information you need when you talk to a woman concerned about breast cancer. The chapter dedicated to perception of risk will refresh your knowledge and help you talk to your patients about their individual prospects, while the short chapter on clinical trials will help you discuss potential participation in trials and answer common questions. Improvements in the management of breast cancer have followed three major themes in recent years: greater optimization of individualized local treatment, longer duration of therapies, and the use of biological therapies targeted at specific receptors. This colorful up-to-date handbook addresses all these trends, alongside the disturbing issues of overdiagnosis as a result of screening and overtreatment. Given the explosion in information technology, patients and their families have access to much more information on their condition and as a result assume a more active role in their medical management. Health professionals have an important role in helping patients sort the facts from the fallacies, put the risks and benefits into perspective and balance their treatment choices. For this reason alone, Fast Facts: Breast Cancer is an invaluable evidence-based resource for everyone working in breast cancer care in primary and secondary settings, from medical and nursing students, to GPs, specialist nurses and residents. The authors encourage you to make your patients well-informed active partners in their breast cancer care by sharing this highly readable book with them.

      Advances in Ovarian Cancer Management

      by Peter E Schwartz

The sixteen chapters of Advances in Ovarian Cancer Management present a concise, timely and comprehensive overview on the current status of the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of women with epithelial ovarian cancer. The book introduces the incessant menstruation hypothesis, which may allow physicians to better understand and explain to patients why many serous ovarian cancers may actually be originating from the fimbriated end of the fallopian tube and why endometrioid and clear cell cancers may arise in association with endometriosis. Subsequent chapters discuss diagnostic evaluation prior to the patient undergoing treatment and the surgical and chemotherapeutic management of the disease. There are overviews of new approaches such as anti-angiogenesis therapy, PARP inhibitors, immunotherapy and emerging target therapies. Discussions of alternative treatment strategies, such as neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgical cytoreduction and adjuvant chemotherapy are included, together with the management of recurrent ovarian cancer, both from a surgical perspective and from a perspective of chemotherapeutic agents. Advances in Ovarian Cancer Management concludes with a chapter on palliative care, a critical part of the overall management of women with this devastating disease. The final chapter provides contemporary guidelines for the initial management of ovarian cancer as well as for recurrent disease.

      Advances in Cervical Cancer Management

      by Perry W Grigsby

Cervical cancer is a global health problem and is the third most common cancer in women worldwide. Approximately 85% of the cases occur in women living in developing countries. The majority of invasive cervical cancers are cause by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18. Screening for cervical cancer with Pap cytology has greatly reduced the incidence of invasive cervical cancer. Screening that incorporates high-risk HPV detection is increasingly utilized. Screening strategies will continue to evolve by incorporating new technologies that can best be utilized in each country. Vaccines that protect against HPV types 16 and 18 are available. The maximum protective effects of these vaccines are obtained when given before the onset of sexual activity. The vaccines have also been shown to have a protective effect in young adults.

      Current Approaches to Endometrial Cancer

by Noriaki Sakuragi, Steven G Silverberg

As the symptom of atypical genital bleeding and discharge appears early in the clinical course, many women with endometrial cancer have early-stage disease at diagnosis. This leads to general recognition of endometrial cancer as an indolent disease. The number of published scientific articles on endometrial cancer searched on Pubmed is fewer than those on cervical and ovarian cancer, although endometrial cancer is the most frequent malignancy of the female reproductive organs in industrialized countries. However, it is important to know that advanced-stage disease (stage III/IV) does have an ominous outcome similar to that of cervical and ovarian cancers. Further promotion of basic and clinical research to improve the prognosis of endometrial cancer is clearly necessary.

Taking a practical policy approach, this book covers the background and concepts underlying efforts to improve maternal and perinatal mortality, the current global situation and problems that prevent progress. It includes case studies and examples of successful strategies, recommends good practices, and provides a critical analysis of knowledge gaps to inform areas for future research.

      Schwangerschaft mit 40 plus

      Kinderwunschbehandlung, Schwangerschafts- und Geburtsbetreuung

      by Birgit Seelbach-Göbel, Wolfgang Würfel

Immer mehr Frauen bzw. Paare verwirklichen ihren Kinderwunsch jenseits des 40. Lebensjahres.

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) in Gynaecological Practice

      Practical Examples in Gynecology

by Ertan Saridogan, Sami G. Kilic, Kubilay Ertan

Gynaecological practice has changed fundamentally in the last three decades and a large proportion of major pelvic operations has been replaced by minimally invasive approaches. This book will cover minimally invasive approaches in all aspects of gynaecology including general gynaecology, oncology, urogynaecology and reproductive medicine. The chapters are written at a level appropriate for trainees/residents and general gynaecology specialists but enough details and additional resources will be provided for those who require further information. Specific aim of the book is to provide direct to the point surgical pearls which can be adapted to the daily practice instantly by the target audience. The book includes chapters on relevant surgical anatomy, principles of MIS, management of camera systems, video/image editing, initiating a successful MIS practice, improving efficiency of current MIS program, how to develop successful teaching techniques in academic setting, avoiding & managing MIS related surgical complications and preoperative/postoperative care before covering MIS for individual conditions including intensive care managements. Chapters are written by world renown authorities. ACOG guideline recently published a statement recommending vaginal hysterectomy and endoscopic hysterectomy should be considered as a first step of surgical choice. Current practice has been shifting from open cases to laparoscopic/ robotic assisted cases while vaginal cases stays steady. This shift has created an urge among gynaecologists to learn, improve or adapt laparoscopic/ robotic techniques in their practice.
