      Trends in Training

      In the modern workplace, millions of dollars are spent each year on employee training. All too often, however, little thought and effort is spent on evaluating training and ensuring that the correct training is taking place. Successful training is about understanding both organizational goals and employee behavior. The basis for this book is the 9th Annual River Cities Industrial and Organizational Psychology Conference held on the campus of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in October 2013. The theme of the conference was “Trends in Training”. Accordingly, the focus of many of the talks was on how to train people to thrive and succeed in the environment where they spend a large portion of their lives – the workplace.

      The Impact of the UK Temporary Employment Industry in Assisting Agency Workers since the Year 2000

      Temporary agency work has been a central topic of employment discourse in recent years, and the flexible working arrangements it can provide individuals and organisations has served to increase this attention in the current economic climate. Temporary employment agencies can provide organisations with fast access to potential staff and individuals with a variety of flexible working opportunities. However, negative worker experiences and the lack of contractual protection have been a source of criticism that resulted in the EU’s adoption of the Agency Workers Directive towards the end of 2011.This study is concerned with assessing the impact of the UK temporary employment industry in assisting agency workers since the year 2000, and incorporates four research questions: (1) To what extent have temporary employment agencies provided employment opportunities to vulnerable groups since the year 2000? (2) How are individuals psychologically affected by working as temporary agency workers, and what are the implications? (3) Individual agency workers often interact with several different groups including temporary employment agencies, third party employers, permanent workers and trade unions. Are there tensions that exist between these groups, and how do they manifest themselves? (4) Recent legislative development has occurred with the adoption of the Agency Workers Directive. What are the implications for individual agency workers and temporary employment agencies?The study incorporates semi-structured interviews with agency workers and their permanent colleagues, as well as recruitment consultants and their clients. Additional data from participants’ follow-up interviews and analysis of researcher diary extracts serve to build a picture of the temporary employment industry at an individual and organisational level. The findings of the study include the influence that motive can have upon how agency workers view their ensuing employment, the negative psychological impact that reduced contractual obligation can have upon the individual, and the detrimental outcomes that can result from the short-term and cyclical nature of agency employment. Further findings are also discussed, and the text concludes by outlining the study’s contribution to knowledge.

      The rapidly growing recognition of the importance of emotion in understanding all aspects of organizational life is facilitating the development of focused areas of scholarship. The articles in this volume represent a selection of the best papers presented at the sixth International Conference on Emotions and Organizational Life (held in Atlanta, in July 2006), complemented with invited chapters by leading scholars in the field. The theme of this volume, Emotions, Ethics and Decision-making, concerns the role of emotions in decision-making in general, and also more specifically the special place of emotions in decisions that have an ethical character. However, until now we know only little about the processes that reduce and reverse the effects of the stress process. This volume aims at filling this gap in the literature by focusing on processes related to recovery and unwinding from job stress. The book integrates various perspectives on the topic. The chapters demonstrate that recovery research is a very promising approach for understanding the processes of job stress and relieve from job stress more fully. Moreover, the chapters illustrate that recovery is a very important topic for practical job-stress interventions that have the potential to reduce the negative impact of job stress for employee health and well-being.

      The Role of Demographics in Occupational Stress and Well Being

      This peer-reviewed series promotes theory and research in the expanding area of occupational stress, health and well-being. Each volume of this series focuses on a particular topic, allowing authors and readers in that area to critically explore the cutting edge work from their discipline. Interest in organizational demography spans several decades (e.g., Pfeffer, 1983). However, in much of the contemporary research on occupational stress and well-being, demographic factors such as gender, age, and race/ethnicity are evident in the background and controlled in statistical analysis. In this volume, we ask whether that should be the case and the extent to which those demographics impact our experience of stress and well-being. Topics for this volume include age, occupational strain, and well-being using a person-environment fit perspective; race, stress, and well being in organizations; gender facades, biological sex, and gender role stereotypes in the workplace; age, resilience, wellbeing, and positive work outcomes; conceptual/theoretical issues related to religion and stress/well-being; and sex and sexual orientation on occupational stress and well being.
