Blue Eyes - Head Work

by Hema Macherla

Description

An inspiration… this book has touched a chord among women not only from India but from the West and Europe. — The Hindu

If you loved Indian author Hema Macherla’s Breeze from The River Manjeera, you will love her second novel, Blue Eyes. At the heart of this fast-moving narrative is the love of two men - one Indian, one British - for one woman.

A novel of epic proportions and set in Gandhi’s volatile India, the story opens with Anjali, aged eighteen, about to be burnt alive on her husband’s funeral pyre – the conventional widow’s fate.
Childhood friend, Saleem, helps Angali make a daring and dramatic escape but the plan goes badly wrong and she embarks on an extraordinary, often terrifying journey without Saleem which begins with a train journey which takes her across India. Found by a woman of the harem, Anjali meets other ‘fallen women’ with whom she forms strong bonds and friendships. Together they try to free themselves from their shocking fates.

Throughout, Saleem is entwined in Anjali’s destiny. As he searches for her with increasing desperation and fear, he is caught up in the violence surrounding India’s struggle for freedom when Ghandi takes the world stage. Saleem joins the freedom fighters, his own life now at risk.
The narrative is told alternatively by Anjali and Saleem.
