Description
The novel shows the human element deep rooted in the hero «Yousif Kamal Najib» who is in earnest self-finding quest, and is living the dilemma of whether to identify himself with his Egyptian father or with his British mother, who wishes him to stay in England. On the other hand his father’s dream is for him to make use of his profession for the benefit of his own people in Egypt and in Africa as a whole. Thus, from its very beginning, the novel places us in front of the choice: the father’s disbelief of Abdel Naser’s death, and the son’s dream of wealth. In the preface, the author makes duality the foundation for the understanding of his world: To those who think that they can use their minds only in taking their decisions, be sure that, a lot of times, it is your heart that takes the first step. The integration of mind and heart, and not their detachment, applies to the overall vision of the novel. A flood of challenges faces the hero and, in an attempt to overcome them. he finds his own self. The first of these challenges is his personal ambitions and desire to succeed, both financially and then scientifically. He dreams of establishing a medical empire for the treatment of the wealthy people from the Gulf countries. From the very first moment. The author is always placing his hero between two worlds. The shift to the positive is shown at the moment when he meets the English Professor who has devoted his life to the treatment of leprosy in Africa. He has established a research unit for the discovery of a treatment for that disease. His mother, who has arranged that meeting with the Professor, was trying to keep him linked to his roots in his second homeland, England. He ends by being devoted to Africa in which he spent two years in Nairobi, Kenya. He, the Egyptian, succeeds in finding cure for leprosy and thus the British Professor has discovered that the cultural plan of the Egyptian African and British Yousif Kamal Naguib is capable of creativity. Once more, the author resorts to duality: the highly motivated West and the underdeveloped Africa. The Professor puts his hand on the necessary and cultural key for a solution to the Third World. When describing the reckless Yousif, it is as though he is giving an accurate description of our world. These are some features of the personality of the Egyptian African Yousif , features that characterize the same countries that have not yet found itself though they have all the potentialities. Thus it remains divided between its self-potentials and its everlasting aspirations for the west to bring out its energies. This meaning prevails throughout the details of the novel and its epical spirit. In the novel, the western model is represented by Schort and Neville. Schort is an example of the European machine, who devotes his time and life to work, to ensure a comfortable retirement. Neville is a criminal who makes a business out of trading with the organs of children and boys and shipping them to England. He is part of a world mafia that plunders the goods of the continent without any conscience reprimands or mercy. Schort is Yousif’s friend, Neville is his enemy. Both, yousif’s fiancée and his mother, meet Neville to destroy Yousif’s dreams in Nairobi and separate him from his beloved Toya. Their love for Yousif become part of the obstacles that he has defeated by marrying Toya, before she was killed at the hands of Neville and Airai for knowing their secret. That is the reason behind Yousif’s insistence on staying in Nairobi, to discover a cure for leprosy the spread of which among the African tribes means millions of dollars, for Neville. Thus Yousif, the Egyptian, reaches the most dangerous challenge in his journey: to eliminate the criminal gang that consists of Neville, Airai and Minju. He discovers the cure and tells the police about the gang, for which he paid a dear price: the murder of his beloved Toya at the hands of the gang, after giving birth to a beautiful baby girl whom, at the end, he will take back to Egypt. This is the link to the African roots, a symbol for the affiliation of Egypt and Africa.
