ÉTICA INTERCULTURAL
by Norbert Bilbeny
Description
INTERCULTURAL ETHICS
Ethics has always set great store by its “universal” nature. Local features nonetheless still reign supreme. It is not a question simply of eliminating such features (indeed, they may well be worth championing, as a source of pride). However, any approach to ethics that seeks to be of practical use (and of practical use to all) must be based on shared values and universal maxims. This work is a response to the major challenge today facing practical reasoning: to ensure it is valid for society in all its diversity. If the world’s problems are the same for one and all, the same goes for its solutions. One prerequisite for putting such matters into practice is to have in place a moral vision that is shared and, at one and the same time, respectful of diversity. With this in mind, a shared ethical approach is not only possible, but rather essential in a world in which intercommunication is ever-present and a diversity of opinions constantly emerges. Today’s cities are global enclaves. This book seeks to argue in favor of an intercultural ethical approach founded on sound principles. The author is not content simply to cite human rights, or a shopping list of “values” that will sooner or later prove to serve one particular culture only. This is not enough for a universal ethical approach. Bilbeny puts forward a different, fresh angle: human knowledge itself provides us with the pre-requisites for understanding one another and living together, with all our differences. All that remains is to develop and put such matters into practice.
