The first account of the astonishing architectural model collection of Sir John Soane, one of the most significant in the world, and of his model room – lost to public view for more than 100 years – this will be THE must-have book on architectural models
Sir John Soane’s collection of architectural models is the largest in Britain and, in the case of the cork models, one of the largest in the world.
The book will introduce the subject and significance of architectural models, including their relevance today in an essay by Abraham Thomas, Director of Sir John Soane’s Museum. The history of Soane’s collecting of models, of the Model Room and of its restoration will be described and then the various sections of the collection set out with individual entries for each model. The essay and catalogue for the cork models has been provided by Professor Valentin Kockel, until this year Professor of Archaeology at Augsburg University and the world’s foremost authority on cork models.
