Of a Rainbow
by Joanne Maria McNally
Description
'Of a Rainbow' is truly colourful, dynamic and transforming in conception and creation, certainty and illusion – spanning an ancient and mythical past, cosmic journeys, historical and contemporary events and tender moments with intense imagination and empathy, deep reflection and varied pace, interwoven with an ever-present rainbow.
The collection includes the poet’s long rhythmic poem ‘The Druid’s Song’; an extract from her playful epic poem ‘Odin’s Best Horse’ with its topical Norse premise, mythical dimensions and contemporary issues of concern; her long reflective poem ‘The Healing Tree’, based on true events in Palestine of a massacre in 1948 and the poet’s interviews with survivors; and her fast-paced ‘Dance of the Rainbow Cloak and Feather Gown’ with its fantastical flights of fancy, musical fanfare and multi-hued dance through the skies.

I think that your narrative poems are your best ones because they allow you to decorate the events with fantasy, which is clearly your strong point. I think that you should take important events and write longer type poems. This would bring out your talent more fully.

Thank you so much for forwarding to me your Song [The Druid’s Song, new long poem, Aug 3-4 2009] …goodness, poetry is so much more compressed and intense than prose, it is a wonder to me how you do it…it just demands such a very imaginative use and placement of words…I really did enjoy this, there was a timelessness to it which felt very rich and very thoughtful…and your particular choice of words were very precise and suggestively applied to the “scenes” you created, detail…if that makes sense…that stanza ‘Wars were not yet known..’, kind of knocked me into the present, I am not sure if that was intentional and it suddenly got a bit uncomfortable (in a good way)…and the contemporary words like maimed and bombed…and then taken back to light and the, how shall I put it..solidity, or constancy of tradition… I loved the ‘railed and railed and railed’ and then the swift move to the coming of the singing…it must be explored more extensively of course…but I had a very strong emotional response to it and also because of the personal voice in which it was told…
I am not sure if that made sense to you, but I thank you very much for sharing it with me!
