Author Biography
is an ethnoecologist whose diverse work focuses on informal, place-based knowledge about food systems in small scale agriculture and gardens as a basis for improvement and collaboration with scientists. That work has included quantifying practices such as farmer seed selection and the phenotypic and genetic response to farmer selection, farmers' risk assessment of transgenic seeds, cultural identity and IPRs in seeds, traditional foods and crop diversity, and new types of semi-formal seed systems. In addition to research, she teaches a class at UCSB on "citizen" and community science, and is part of a multi-year project with colleagues at CSU Fullerton providing research experience to under-represented undergraduate students through community science on urban agriculture.; is a human ecologist who has done research and development project work on sustainable agrifood systems with small-scale farmers and gardeners around the world.
