“First Blood” is a study in contrasting emotions. When we are first introduced to Chris, he’s weightlifting, and I was turned on by the authors’ descriptions of tense, aching muscles and sweaty skin. But then it turns into a pick up exercise in the bar, and I was turned off. Chris already has two partners. Sure, many men, gay and straight, have open relationships, but for the most part, I’m not comfortable reading about them. Revealing that Chris is more on the outside of the threesome helped, however. But this was only the start of the novel. Throughout my reading, Aleksandr Voinov and Barbara Sheridan had my emotions and loyalties swing from one side to the other and back again more than once. -
