Ferdinand Fox's Big Sleep
by Karen Inglis
Description
A delightful rhyming picture book story about a friendly urban fox – also available as an educational App
(Note: the story does not depend on the rhyme so could be translated.)
"Ferdinand Fox curled up in the sun as the church of St Mary struck quarter past one. His tummy was full, he was ready for sleep, and closing his eyes he began to count sheep..."
Beautifully illustrated, this is the first of six delightful rhyming stories for age 3-5+ about Ferdinand, a kindhearted urban fox. When Peter Maceever spots Ferdinand Fox sleeping in his garden he tiptoes out to take a photo, certain that the fox will run off. However, at the click of the camera Ferdinand simply opens one eye and then goes right back to sleep - he has far more important things to do - like dream about cake and ice cream! As the story progresses, and Ferdinand continues to snore, the clock chimes from one through to five o-clock and we see Ferdinand’s favourite food through colourful dream bubbles.
The story ends with Peter Maceever back looking out of his window at the end of the day: “The sun had moved down, the shadows were long, and the fox that had slept in the garden – was gone.”
Based on the true story of a fox that once slept in the author’s garden.
Other stories in the series (not yet illustrated):

Reviews
Louise Jordan (ex-Head Reader for Puffin UK and found of The Writers' Advice Centre for Children's Books)
“Another delightful children's book from author Karen Inglis. Karen is targeting the younger age group this time with a beautifully simple story about a sleeping Fox called Ferdinand. Despite the popularity of rhyming texts with children themselves, they are less popular with UK publishers. So it is lovely to see such a fun story wholly written in rhyme...truly a book for reading aloud again, and again, and again. Look out for the colouring book Ferdinand Fox's Big Sleep Colouring Book which is a fantastic and original addition to the Ferdinand Fox library.”
