Eleftherios Venizelos and MariaEleftheriou: Correspondence (1889-1890)
National Award for Testimony 2019
by M. Z. KOPIDAKIS –MARIA KARAGIANNI
Description
In his extensive introduction, M. Z. Kopidakis comments on the aspects of the Cretan Question, the sequence of events, the resurgence of Islamic fanaticism and the failure of the Ottomanisation of Christians. Venizelos’s stay in Athens, his arduous effort to learn French, and the personalities of the “sentimental” politician and the compassionate Maria are investigated in more detail.
In the correspondence between the engaged couple, the young Eleftherios Venizelos and his fiancée Maria Eleftheriou, political considerations, emotions, recollections, plans for the common future, problems of everyday life – in short, the public and the private – are recorded.
