Key figures include Thomas Jefferson, Washington Allston, Alexander Jackson Davis, James Fenimore Cooper, Washington Irving, Thomas Cole, Edwin Forrest and Nathaniel Hawthorne. This study investigates the symbiotic relationship between the arts and Gothic literature to reveal new interpretative possibilities.
