        Blue Sky Kingdom

An Epic Family Journey to the Heart of the Himalaya

        by Bruce Kirkby

One morning at breakfast, while gawking at his phone and feeling increasingly disconnected from family and everything else of importance in his world, it strikes writer Bruce Kirkby: This isn’t how he wants to live. Within days, plans begin to take shape. Bruce, his wife Christine, and their two children – seven-year-old Bodi and three-year-old Taj – will cross the Pacific by container ship, then travel onward through South Korea, China, India, and Nepal aboard bus, riverboat, and train, eventually traversing the Himalaya by foot. Their destination: a thousand-year-old Buddhist monastery in the remote Zanskar valley, one of the last places where Tibetan Buddhism is still practiced freely in its original setting.   In this refuge, where ancient traditions intersect with the modern world, Kirkby discovers ways to slow down, to observe and listen, and ultimately, to better understand his son on the autism spectrum – to surrender all expectations and connect with Bodi exactly as he is.   Recounted with wit and humility, Blue Sky Kingdom is an engaging travel memoir as well as a thoughtful exploration of modern distraction, the loss of ancient wisdom, and the challenges and rewards of intercultural friendships.

        Accidental Hitman

        by A.W. Wilson

“Hitmen don’t worry about what their underwear’s like, but then proper hitmen don’t poo in their pants.” When Tom White’s dead-end life is blighted by his neighbour’s parties Tom’s aversion to face to face confrontation leads him to an unusual action: he kills the noise pollutant. Unknown to Tom, the neighbour was a target for Stan Costanza, head of a powerful criminal enterprise. Costanza’s heavies are more adept than the police at tracking Tom down and in a farcically comic meeting become convinced that Tom is a skilled lone assassin “one of them ones with the eastern mystical influences”. They offer him another hit and Tom, too scared and perhaps too flattered to decline, takes the job, and the next. Colin, Tom’s best friend, shares Tom’s macabre moral compass and rides shotgun on his assignments, leading to a series of comedy set-pieces but inevitably into darker waters as the reality of their actions takes hold, causing the pair to fall out. Tom catches the interest of Laura, the barmaid in his local pub, and becomes torn between his desire for the long-term object of his affections and the need to keep his nefarious activities from her. When the impossibly beautiful Stephanie arrives, Tom assumes she is a high-ranking member of Costanza’s operation and takes the contracts she assigns. Stephanie doesn’t tell him that her father was murdered by Stan Costanza in a criminal coup d’etat. Stephanie is orchestrating a turf-war between two rival gangs using Tom, along with some of Costanza’s own people, as a key piece in her game to avenge her father’s death and regain her birthright. By the time he realises that he is an unwitting double agent, Tom is being pursued by two police forces and both gangs. As the net closes around him he has no option but to ‘fess up to Laura, make peace with Colin and leave his fate in the hands of Stephanie. Costanza meets his arch-rival, Joe Barrett, for a sit-down to discusstheir mutual problem - namely Tom White - but this is actually Stephanie’s final push. She shows her cards to the hapless crime-lords, including the fact that she has turned most of their own men against them. In a final showdown, Stephanie kills both men and takes what is rightfully hers. But what of Tom? Wanted for murder he badly needs a fresh start. Stephanie uses her valuable connections to set up a new life for him, Laura and Colin under the cloak of the witness protection program in the USA. They have a new home, new names and Tom has a new job, one that makes good use of his talents and protects his anonymity: an executioner for the state of Texas. Accidental Hitman is a thriller but features large doses of comedy in the rapport between the characters, the first-person narrator’s musings on modern life and the farcical situations Tom and Colin bumble into as they carry out their murders-to-order. MISSING ANGEL

        by CHRISTOPHER NEW

Enduring another of his amateur actress wife June’s parties, John Bishop sneaks away upstairs to say good night to his thirteen-year-old daughter Angel, then goes reluctantly down to act as host. A would-be astronomer who dropped out of university to marry June when she became pregnant after a one night stand, he is now an air traffic controller at London Airport, whose chief delight is Angel and the stars. Tomorrow they plan to watch a new comet together through his telescope. But the next day Angel fails to return from school. Day follows day, sleepless night follows sleepless night. John and June find themselves under suspicion for a time, being questioned by the sly Inspector Mabbott, who sometimes seems more interested in toying with them than in finding their daughter. The ‘Missing Angel,’ temporarily a media celebrity, is soon displaced by a new sensation and Angel becomes just another unsolved case in the Missing Persons file. When a psychic astrologer friend of June’s claims to have seen her ‘passing over,’ June gives up all hope, and tries to resume her life. Not so John. He searches London’s seediest streets night after night, comes home exhausted and searches again the following night. To keep her memory fresh in his mind, he starts writing private messages to Angel on his computer. He is searching for her, he tells her, as astronomers once searched the skies for a missing asteroid. Gradually June and he, never very close, drift further apart. June accuses him of being morbidly obsessed and continues a clandestine affair; he accuses her of heartlessness. Eventually June moves out to live with her lover. Soon John begins a tentative friendship with Amy, a divorced colleague at work. John’s relationship with Amy deepens as the months pass, and it seems he too is at last putting his loss behind him, when a chance find of some pornographic photos revives his conviction that Angel is alive, although the police experts assure him the girl in the smudged pictures is not her. Persisting against all disbelief and indifference, he is eventually led to the sinister sensualist Anton, who remains just within the law and claims he can help – or is he merely stringing John along for the money he extracts from him? In a state of utter fatigue, John’s concentration fails dangerously at the control tower as a plane comes in to land and he is suspended from work. But Anton says he has finally located the girl in the photos, and, despite Amy’s entreaties and warnings, John sets off alone with the large cash fee that Anton demands for finding her. John finds the address, where supposedly Angel, now an underage prostitute, can be found. A girl like Angel appears, but when she sees him, runs away. John chases after her, sees her boarding a bus, but is himself knocked down by a following bus as he lunges after her. When he recovers consciousness, he sees Angel bending over him while the paramedics assess his injuries.

THE MANY MASKS OF ANDY ZHOU

        by Jack Cheng

Creative and brave sixth grader Andy Zhou faces big changes at school and at home in this new middle-grade novel by the award-winning author of See You in the Cosmos. Andy Zhou is used to being what people need him to be: the good kid for his parents and now grandparents visiting from Shanghai, or the helpful sidekick to his best friend Cindy’s rebellious plans and schemes. So when Cindy decides they should try out for Movement after school on the first day of sixth grade, how can Andy say no? But between feeling out of place with the dancers, being hassled by his new science partner Jameel, and sensing tension between his dad and grand-father, Andy feels all kinds of weird. Then, over anime, Hi-Chews, and Andy’s iguana-inspired artwork, things shift between him and Jameel, opening up new doors—and also new complications. No matter how much Andy cares about his friends and family, it’s hard not to feel pulled between all the ways he's meant to be, all the different faces he wears, and harder still to figure out if any of these masks is the real him. A sublime and often funny story of family and friendship, identity and creativity, and both the love and culture gap between immigrant grandparents, parents, and their kids, Jack Cheng’s new novel resonates with humor, honest truths, and enormous heart.

        The Funeral Concerto

        by Rimui

        * 2020 Japan International Manga Award (Gold)   In search of herself, Lin Chu-sheng quits university and ends up living and working for a funeral director. From her shock at seeing her first corpse, to becoming a practiced yet still compassionate employee, her experiences help her realize who she really is, and what she really wants.     In search of her dreams, Lin Chu-sheng quits university, leaves home and starts working for a funeral director. Her first job: a decomposing corpse. And before the shock of seeing her first dead body has passed, she is set to work, cleaning floors and washing bodies. It might sound like simple work, but she has plenty to learn…   And while she may work with the dead, most of her time is spent dealing with the emotions of those still living: a father unable to accept his son’s suicide; a bigamist’s families meeting only after his death; a mother unwilling to let a child go; and parents unsure if their son’s body will ever be found. Lin witnesses the full range of human experience and reflects on her own family and life.   This is a story of the real emotions lurking beneath the fussy details of a funeral, told from the perspective of a new employee. Rimui visited funeral homes as part of the research for this book and draws on traditional Chinese funeral practices. Moving and meticulously researched, this is a compelling tale of a unique profession.
