        Nutrition and Feeding Organic Cattle

        by Robert Blair

        Organic cattle farming is on the increase, with consumer demand for organic milk and meat growing yearly. Beginning with an overview of the aims and principles behind organic cattle production, this book presents extensive information about how to feed cattle so that the milk and meat produced meet organic standards, and provides a comprehensive summary of ruminant digestive processes and nutrition. Since the publication of the first edition, global consumers have increasingly become concerned with the sustainability of meat production. Here, Robert Blair considers the interrelationships of sustainable practices and profitability of organic herds, reviewing how to improve forage production and quality, and minimizing the need for supplementary feeding using off-farm ingredients. This new edition also covers: - Managing a recurrent shortage of organic feed ingredients, due to increased GM feed crop cultivation worldwide - Current findings on appropriate breeds and grazing systems for forage-based organic production - Diet-related health issues in organic herds and the effects of organic production on meat and milk quality. Required reading for animal science researchers, advisory personnel that service the organic milk and beef industries and students interested in organic milk and meat production, this book is also a useful resource for organic farming associations, veterinarians, and feed and food industry personnel.

        In defence of councillors

        by Colin Copus

        In defence of councillors is an unashamed defence of local representative democracy and of those elected to serve as councillors from the often ill-informed, ill-judged and inaccurate criticism made by the media, government and public, of councillors' personal, political and professional roles. By using qualitative research from a number of related projects, the book examines the roles, functions and responsibilities of councillors and the expectations placed upon them by citizens, communities and government. It also examines the impact council membership has on other facets of the councillor's life. The book examines how councillors develop strategies to overcome the constraints and restrictions on their office so as to be able to govern their communities, balance their political and public life and democratise and hold to account a vast array of unelected bodies that spend public money and develop public policy without the electoral mandate and legitimacy held by our councillors. ;

        Democratising Conservative leadership selection

        From grey suits to grass roots

        by Andrew Denham, Kieron O'Hara

        Democratising Conservative leadership selection traces the effects of democracy on the British Conservative Party, specifically looking at how changes in the ways the Conservatives elect their leaders have altered their mandate to lead. The book includes analysis of the original undemocratic 'system' whereby a leader 'emerged' from a shadowy process of consultation, and of the six elections between 1965 and 1997 where the parliamentary Conservative Party alone chose the Party leader. This historical perspective is followed by in-depth analysis of the three contests since 2001 that have taken place under the 'Hague rules', according to which ordinary Party members have the final say. This is the most comprehensive account yet published of the operation of those rules on the Conservative Party and the legitimacy of its leadership, and of the 2005 election of David Cameron. This book will be essential reading for students, academic specialists and anyone interested in the recent history and contemporary practice of British Conservatism. ;

        A comparative study of compulsory voting

        by Sarah Birch

        About a quarter of all democracies today legally oblige their citizens to vote, making this an important aspect of electoral systems in many settings. Moreover, numerous commentators and policy-makers in voluntary voting states are coming to view mandatory attendance at the polls as an attractive option in the context of declining turnout. Yet there has been a dearth of analysis of the way in which compulsory voting shapes attitudes, behaviour and outcomes of the political process. This volume fills that gap by providing a comprehensive description, analysis and evaluation of compulsory voting as it is practiced throughout the world. Specifically, the study systematically examines the history of the institution, the normative arguments for and against it, and the influence it has on a range of political phenomena. These include electoral campaigns, political attitudes, electoral integrity and legitimacy, policy outcomes and turnout. The book also considers the feasibility of introducing compulsory voting in a contemporary democracy, as well as variations on the institution designed to broaden its appeal. ;

        EU pharmaceutical regulation

        The politics of policy-making

        by Govin Permanand, Dimitris Papadimitriou, Simon Bulmer, Andrew Geddes, Peter Humphreys, Caroline Wilding

        This book provides an analysis of European Union pharmaceutical regulation from a policy-making perspective. The focus is on how the often conflicting agendas of the pharmaceutical industry, the EU member states, the European Commission, and consumer interests are reconciled within the context of regulatory outcomes having to serve public health, healthcare and industrial policy needs within the single market. Breaking with more traditional approaches which stress the economic determinants of pharmaceutical policy, different strands of public policy analysis, regulatory and European integration and policy-making theories are invoked in developing a new conceptual approach to frame the analysis. In-depth case-studies in three key policy areas: patent protection, market authorisation, and pricing and reimbursement, provide substantive support. In providing a unique perspective on how and why EU pharmaceutical policy is made, the book will be of interest to academics, students and policy-practitioners interested in EU policy-making, regulation and public policy analysis. ;

        History of the Chinese Communist Party's Mass Line Thought

        by LUO Pinghan

        This Book systematically explores the formation and development of the mass line thought of the Chinese Communist Party, and analyzes its mass viewpoint under different historical conditions, including: (1) Formation and theoretical generalization of the mass line thought. For the first time, the Communist Party of China realized the transformation of the revolutionary subject from the elite to the masses. (2) Continuations and setbacks of the mass line thought. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the general implementation of democratic centralism in national institutions and organizations, and the establishment of political consultation system and the system of people's congress fully reflect the application of the Party's mass line in the establishment of specific systems. (3) Restoration and innovation of the mass line thought. Since the Reform and Opening-up, the Party has restored the fine tradition of the mass line. DENG Xiaoping's theory of "People's Support", "People's Approval", "People's Delightfulness" and "People's Agreement", JIANG Zemin's "Three Represents", and HU Jintao's theory that "The government must function by the mandate of the people, empathize with the feelings of the people, and work for the well-being of the people" all reflect the innovation of the Party's mass line in the new century."

        The Practice of Pharmacy

        Textbook for pharmacy interns Handbook for the pharmacy

        by Dr. Michael Sax, founded by Dr. Herbert Gebler and Dr. Gerd Kindl

        After pharmacy studies have ended, the fascinating world of the pharmacy awaits – simultaneously varied and challenging. This is no problem with this well-established standard work to hand! The 7th edition, with a new editor and new structure, goes through the various stages of pharmacy operation. Beginning with the social mandate to supply medicines and then considering the organisational and economic orientation of a pharmacy, one delves ever deeper into its inner workings. In every area, the appropriate specific information can be found about pharmaceutical law and practice – whether this concerns the back office, over-the-counter medicines, dispensary and dispensing, or the supply of care homes, or preparation of cytotoxic drugs. In addition to the important topic “Dispensing of drugs and medical devices on prescription”, particular attention is paid to the principal activity in the pharmacy – giving advice on self-medication. The contents are based on the regulations for registration of pharmacists and the guidelines of the Federal Chamber of Pharmacists for the practical training of pharmacy interns in the pharmacy. The Practice of Pharmacy safely navigates the user through the practical training year and is the ideal preparation for the 3rd State Examination! Returnees, pharmacies that provide training and pharmacists of many years’ experience, will also benefit from this textbook and reference work.

        Im Lande Israel

        Herbst 1982

        by Amos Oz, Raya Natenbruk

        Um die Gesellschaft eines Landes zu beschreiben, kann man sich, grob gesagt, zweier Methoden bedienen: Man kann, mit dem Anspruch auf Repräsentativität, ihre unterschiedlichen Bereiche und deren Zusammenhänge analysieren; oder man kann, durch eine Beschäftigung mit einem Ausschnitt der Realität einer Gesellschaft, eine bestimmte Dimension in ihren unterschiedlichen Ausprägungen deutlich machen. Amos Oz –, der bekannte israelische Autor, erkundetet die Vorstellungen, Hoffnungen, Ängste und Vorurteile einiger Bewohner Israels gegen Ende des Jahres 1982. Er unterhielt sich mit Siedlern auf der Westbank, einem noch vor der Zeit des britischen Mandats eingewanderten Landwirt, einem Professor für Philosophie der Universität von Jerusalem, dem Chefredakteur einer in Jerusalem erscheinenden Palästinenser-Zeitung u.a. In diesen Gesprächen treten die unterschiedlichen Haltungen zu den in Israel virulenten Problemen zutage: zu Fragen der Siedlungspolitik, zum Verhältnis Juden–Araber, zu den Beziehungen zwischen orientalischen und eingewanderten europäischen Juden, ›orthodoxe‹ und nicht-orthodoxe Meinungen über die Juden als das »auserwählte Volk« werden vertreten und die Beziehungen zwischen Zionisten, Nicht-Zionisten und Anti-Zionisten thematisiert. Da der Autor auf interpretierende Eingriffe weitgehend verzichtet hat, können die Darlegungen der jeweiligen Gesprächspartner als Momentaufnahmen über den geistig-politischen Zustand Israels gelesen werden.

        Bovine Tuberculosis

        by Mark Chambers, Stephen Gordon, Francisco Olea-Popelka, Paul Barrow

        This book is contemporary, topical and global in its approach, and provides an essential, comprehensive treatise on bovine tuberculosis and the bacterium that causes it, Mycobacterium bovis. Bovine tuberculosis remains a major cause of economic loss in cattle industries worldwide, exacerbated in some countries by the presence of a substantial wildlife reservoir. It is a major zoonosis, causing human infection through consumption of unpasteurised milk or by close contact with infected animals. Following a systematic approach, expert international authors cover epidemiology and the global situation; microbial virulence and pathogenesis; host responses to the pathogen; and diagnosis and control of the disease. Aimed at researchers and practising veterinarians, this book is essential for those needing comprehensive information on the pathogen and disease, and offers a summary of key information learned from human tuberculosis research. It will be useful to those studying the infection and for those responsible for controlling the disease.

        EXCAVATING THE CITY OF DAVID

        by Ronny Reich

        Archaeological research over the past 150 years has identified Jerusalem’s southeastern hill, outside the Old City walls, as the biblical City of David. The growing realization that this hill is indeed the most ancient part of Jerusalem led many scholars to excavate it. Since the first excavation by Charles Warren in 1867 to the present, fourteen archaeological expeditions have dug here, making the City of David hill one of the most excavated sites in Israel. British, German, French, and Israeli teams have dug here under four different governments (Ottoman, British Mandate, Jordanian, and Israeli), producing an impressive quantity of data. Some of these remains are uniquely important, including the Siloam Tunnel, the Warren’s Shaft system, the Siloam Inscription, the Theodotos Inscription, and the Pool of Siloam. Recent excavations at the City of David have uncovered impressive remains of Middle Bronze Age fortifications around the Gihon Spring and remains of the Siloam Pool dating to the Second Temple period. The Siloam Tunnel has now been thoroughly documented and studied. This book begins with a chronological survey of a century and a half of excavation and study of the City of David hill. It then summarizes the history of the hill, from prehistoric times to the end of the Ottoman period. It presents an up-to-date summary of past and recent archaeological discoveries, many of which, presented here for the first time, have dramatically changed our thinking about Jerusalem’s ancient history.   Ronny Reich has been excavating and studying Jerusalem’s antiquities for over forty years. From 1969 to 1978 he participated in the excavations directed by Professor Nahman Avigad in Jerusalem’s Jewish Quarter. Since 1995 he has been co-director of the City of David Excavations. Professor Reich is a graduate of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Jewish ritual baths in the Second Temple period. Since 1995 he has been a professor of archaeology at the University of Haifa. In 2000 he was awarded the Jerusalem Prize for Archaeological Research.   27 × 22 cm., 382 pages, hardcover, numerous black & white and color illustrations.

        Against All Odds

        The Magnificent Trio That Built the Israeli Air Force

        by Hugo N. Gerstl

        1947 – The UN declares that the British Mandate over Palestine will come to an end. In May 1948 Israel and Arab Palestine will be divided into two independent states. The Arab world reacts immediately: There will be no Jewish state; it will be driven into the sea! Sixty-five million Arabs against six hundred thousand Israeli Jews. Britain has washed its hands of the problem. The United States, under the guise of the Neutrality Act, makes it a felony for any American to supply side with any arms. Americans Al Schwimmer, Hank Greenspun, and Charlie Winters boldly defy the Neutrality Act and risk convictions by purchasing twenty-three former Nazi Messerschmitt Bf-109s in Czechoslovakia, painting out the swastikas on the tails with Jewish stars of David, and smuggling them to Israel; founding a “Panamanian” airline and flying seven large aircraft out of Panama “to do an aerial survey,” but never returning; securing a huge cache of ammunition from a sympathetic junk dealer in Hawaii; smuggling weapons to Mexico on a hijacked yacht, and ultimately shipping them “to Nationalist China” – via Israel. Stripped of most of their rights as US citizens, Schwimmer is recruited to start a small aircraft maintenance plant in Israel, which will become Israel Aircraft Industries, a billion-dollar-a-year operation; Greenspun purchases a defunct newspaper, which he turns into the and is among the first to call witch-hunting Senator Joseph McCarthy to account; Winters returns to importing and exporting fruit and diamonds between Israel and the United States. After the 1967 Six-Day War, when France reneges on its commitment to sell Israel fifty advanced fighter jets, the trio manages to “steal” plans from a friendly engineer in Geneva. Within six months Israel turns out its own homegrown Mach 2 fighter aircraft. And that’s just the beginning. International best-selling author has crafted a tantalizing, rewarding, magnificently readable tour de force based on the true life stories of three of Israel’s most unheralded heroes, cementing and enhancing his reputation as a master storyteller.  Published By Pangæa Publishing Group, 2019. 560 pages – 23 cm x 15 cm , 489 Pages.

        Global Conspiracy

        by David Shomron

        Only a once wanted underground activist, who later operated as a senior ex-Mossad agent, could have imagined this tantalizing plot. A group of European scientists and retired military personnel believe that western democracies and the United Nations are incapable of facing aggressive dictatorships. None of the imposed "sanctions" seem to impress the tyrants. The group members are horrified with the notion of a devastating nuclear disaster in a matter of two or three years that would claim the lives of hundreds of millions. They decide to take preventive action, and contend with this threat employing unusual and original methods, without the use of force or violence, propaganda or incitement, and yet with no less effective results. The group’s leader is a woman (a history professor at the Sorbonne in Paris), a retired admiral, a scientist and an ex-commando officer – all British. Professionals from various European countries join them in their cause, and together they reach amazing levels of technological sophistication though have to overcome unforeseen problems – or else the entire project would be jeopardized. David Shomron was born in Istanbul, where his parents had found refuge during the Communist Revolution in Russia, and immigrated with them in 1934 to Israel (then Palestine). The author has invested ten years in the underground movements before the State of Israel was established, and later served as a high ranking officer in the Mossad during more than twenty years. Subsequently, he headed for 13 Years a civilian security company as the C.E.O. of "BRINKS Israel Ltd.". In his 90's, David Shomron is a much sought-after lecturer on the time of the British Mandate. He has published four books – two on his life as an underground operator, and two novels – and continues to write to this day. David, now remarried, lives with his wife in Jerusalem. They have two daughters, nine grand children and nine great-grandchildren. An English-language eBook edition  was published in fall 2016 by Samuel Wachtman's Sons, Inc.,CA. 460 Pages, 15X22 cm

        Hadassah

        by Par le Pr Shifra Shvarts et le Dr Zipora Shehory-Rubin, avec le concours du Pr Yoel Donchin

        Hadassah pour la santé publique: La mission médicale et éducative de Hadassah - les Femmes Sionistes Américaines en Terre Sainte Par le Pr Shifra Shvarts et le Dr Zipora Shehory-Rubin, avec le concours du Pr Yoel Donchin Le Livre de Hadassah recouvre les sujets de la femme, de la santé publique et du sionisme. Ce livre se concentre surtout sur le dévouement exceptionnel des membres de l’organisation féminine Hadassah, qui s’est chargée de la mission de mettre en place des services modernes de santé publique pour la communauté juive de Palestine, sous le mandat britannique, sur la base de son expérience dans ce domaine en Amérique. Pendant les dix premières années, des services de santé publique ont été pourvus à 46 000 femmes enceintes, à 53 000 enfants en bas âge, les infirmières ont fourni 700 000 soins à domicile et 1,7 millions de consultations ont été effectuées dans les 44 dispensaires  procurant des services pour le bien-être de la mère et l’enfant à travers le pays. Grace à ces services, la mortalité infantile a fortement baissé dans la communauté juive de 144:1000 en 1922 à 54:1000 in 1939 (en comparaison de 50:1000 aux U.S.A. et 53:1000 au Royaume Uni). Aucune autre entreprise de dévouements similaire n’a réussi à accomplir des résultats aussi remarquables en une période aussi courte. Tous les services de santé publique fournis sous la tutelle de Hadassah étaient égalitaires et s’adressaient aussi bien à la communauté arabe. La mission entait fondée principalement sur l’idéologie sioniste de construction d’une nouvelle nation, saine de corps et d’esprit. La mission de santé publique de ces femmes américaines constituait une partie intégrante de la mission et des activités sionistes de cette époque. Cependant, au contraire d’autres domaines de l’activité sioniste an Palestine pendant cette période, elle entait entièrement et exclusivement menée par des femmes. Ce livre raconte l’histoire de ces femmes sionistes américaines déterminées et leurs accomplissements remarquables en faveur de la santé de la communauté juive de Palestine, qui constituait les prémices d’une nation en construction. Le Livre de Hadassah renferme aussi des photos originales, qui ont été découvertes il y a seulement quelques annexes dans l’un des anciens entrepôts de Hadassah à Jérusalem par le Pr  Yoel Donchin, et que l’on peut actuellement voir dans une exposition spéciale au Theater de Jérusalem. A propos des auteurs Shifra Shvarts, Ph.D., est professeur titulaire d’histoire de la médecine à l’Université Ben-Gurion et charge de recherche à l’Institut Gertner de recherche épidémiologique et de politique de la santé, au Center Medical Sheba. Elle est spécialisée en histoire social de la médecine et de la santé publique du dix-neuvième siècle au vingtième siècle en Israël. Elle a publié six livres sur le développement et l’histoire du système médical en Israël. Elle est aussi l’auteur des articles sur les caisses de maladie israéliennes dans l’Encyclopédie Médicale Israélienne et dans l’Encyclopedia Judaica. Zipora Shehory-Rubin, Ph.D., est conférencière supérieure au Collège d’Education Académique Kaye à Beer-Shéva, en Israël, où elle enseigne l’histoire de l’éducation et de la langue hébraïque. Elle a obtenu son doctorat en histoire à l’Université du Néguev Ben-Gurion après avoir présenté sa thèse sur les entreprises éducatives et les activités médicales de Hadassah sous le mandat britannique de Palestine. Elle a publié des livres et des articles sur les divers aspects de l’histoire de l’éducation et l’histoire de la médecine. Le Pr Yoel Donchin, M.D., est professeur clinique anesthésiste  et de soins intensifs au Center Médical Hadassah, à l’Université Hébraïque de Jérusalem. Apres avoir fini ses études à la Faculté Médicales Hadassah, il a continue son internat à Hadassah, où il est maintenant le directeur du Center pour la Sécurité du Patient. Il a aussi préservé et restauré plus de 1000 photos et de films originaux témoignant des premières années de Hadassah. Il est actuellement président de la Société Israélienne d’Histoire de la Médecine.

        Globale Verschwörung

        by David Shomron

        Globale Verschwörung / David Shomron   Nur ein einst gesuchter Untergrundaktivist, der später als leitender Ex-Mossad-Agent tätig war, konnte sich diesen Plot ausdenken. Eine Gruppe europäischer Wissenschaftler und Ex-Militärs sind der Ansicht, dass westliche Demokratien und die Vereinten Nationen nicht in der Lage sind, aggressiven Diktaturen etwas entgegenzusetzen. Keine der verhängten Sanktionen scheint die Tyrannen zu beeindrucken. Die Gruppe ist entsetzt über die Vorstellung einer verheerenden Atomkatastrophe in zwei oder drei Jahren, die Hunderte von Millionen Menschenleben fordern würde. Sie beschließen, vorbeugende Maßnahmen zu ergreifen und mit ungewöhnlichen und originellen Methoden gegen diese Bedrohung vorzugehen, ohne Gewalt, Propaganda oder Provokation und dennoch wirksam. Die Anführerin der Gruppe ist eine Frau (Professorin für Geschichte an der Sorbonne in Paris). Die Gruppe besteht aus einem pensionierter Admiral, einer Wissenschaftlerin und einem Ex-Kommandooffizier – allesamt Briten. Fachleute aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern setzen sich für die Anliegen der Gruppe ein, die durch diese Unterstützung über erhebliche technische Mittel verfügt. Doch es gibt unvorhergesehene Probleme, die das gesamte Projekt gefährden könnten. David Shomron wurde in Istanbul geboren, wo seine Eltern während der kommunistischen Revolution in Russland Zuflucht gefunden hatten, und wanderte 1934 mit ihnen nach Israel (damals Palästina) aus. Der Autor hat zehn Jahre vor der Gründung des Staates Israel in die Untergrundbewegung investiert und später mehr als zwanzig Jahre lang als hochrangiger Offizier im Mossad gedient. Anschließend leitete er 13 Jahre lang eine zivile Sicherheitsfirma als CEO von „BRINKS Israel Ltd.“. In den neunziger Jahren war David Shomron ein gefragter Dozent über die Zeit des britischen Mandats. Er hat vier Bücher veröffentlicht – zwei über sein Leben als Geheimagent und zwei Romane. Weitere sind in Arbeit. David Shomron lebt mit seiner Frau in Jerusalem. Sie haben zwei Töchter, neun Enkel und neun Urenkel. Eine englischsprachige E-Book-Ausgabe wurde im Herbst 2016 von Samuel Wachtmans Sons, Inc., CA, veröffentlicht. 460 Seiten, 15 x 22 cm.

        AUSGRABUNG DER STADT DAVIDS

        by Ronny Reich

        AUSGRABUNG DER STADT DAVIDS – Wo die Geschichte Jerusalems begann Von Ronny Reich Die archäologische Forschung der vergangenen 150 Jahre hat den südöstlichen Hügel Jerusalems, außerhalb der alten Stadtmauern, als die biblische Stadt Davids identifiziert. Die wachsende Erkenntnis, dass dieser Hügel tatsächlich der älteste Teil von Jerusalem ist, hat viele Gelehrte dazu bewegt, sie auzugraben. Seit den ersten Ausgrabungen 1867 von Charles Warren bis zur Gegenwart haben hier vierzehn archäologische Expeditionen Ausgrabungen vorgenommen, was die Stadt Davids zu einer der aktivsten Ausgrabungsstätten in Israel macht. Britische, deutsche, französische und israelische Teams haben hier unter vier verschiedenen Regierungen (ottomanisches Reich, britisches Mandat, jordanische Verwaltung und Israel) Ausgrabungen durchgeführt, was zu einer eindrucksvollen Ansammlung von Daten geführt hat. Einige dieser Fundstätten sind besonders wichtig, darunter der Siloam Tunnel, das Schaftsystem von Warren, die Schriften von Siloam, die Schriften von Theodotos und der Teich von Siloam. Jüngere Ausgrabungen an der Stadt Davids haben eindrucksvolle Funde von Befestigungen aus der mittleren Bronzezeit in der Nähe von Gihon Spring und Überreste des Teichs von Siloam ans Tageslicht gebracht, die zurück bis in die Periode des zweiten Tempels reichen. Der Tunnel von Siloam ist mittlerweile gründlich dokumentiert und untersucht worden. Dieses Buch beginnt mit einer chronologischen Übersicht über anderthalb Jahrhunderte von Ausgrabungen und Studien des Hügels der Stadt Davids. Es fasst anschließend die Geschichte des Hügels zusammen von prähistorischen Zeiten bis zum Ende der ottomanischen Periode. Es stellt eine aktuelle Zusammenfassung vergangener und jüngerer archäologischer Entdeckungen vor, von denen viele hier zum ersten Mal präsentiert werden und die unser Denken über die antike Geschichte Jerusalems dramatisch verändert haben.   Ronny Reich nimmt seit über vierzig Jahren an Ausgrabungen und Studien von antiken Stätten in Jerusalem teil.Von 1969 bis 1978 nahm er an den von Professor Nahman Avigad geleiteten Ausgrabungen im jüdischen Viertel Jerusalems teil.Seit 1995 ist er Co-Direktor der Ausgrabungen in der Stadt Davids.Professor Reich verfügt über einen Abschluss der Hebrew University in Jerusalem, wo er seine Dissertation zum Ph.D. über jüdische Ritualbäder in der zweiten Tempelperiode verfasste.Seit 1995 ist er Professor für Archäologie an der Universität von Haifa.2000 erhielt er den Jerusalem Preis für archäologische Forschung.   27 x 22 cm, 382 Seiten, Hardcover, zahlreiche Schwarzweiß- und Farbillustrationen.
