MIGRACIÓN Y COMUNIDAD
by Claudia Reyes Trigos
Description
MIGRATION AND COMMUNITY. TEMPORARY MIGRATION AND DISCOURSE IN THE SOUTH OF GUANAJUATO, MEXICO
The phenomenon of migration in search of work has for over half a century been commonplace between Mexico and the United States, while stretching back thirty years in the case of Canada, thanks to the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP) formalized in 1974. Jalisco, Michoacán, Guanajuato and the State of Mexico are the biggest contributors to this type of seasonal labor migration arrangement. Concerned by this state of affairs and by the exponential rise in numbers over the past three decades, a group of researchers from Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey, led by Dr. Claudia Reyes Trigos, decided to look into the way in which seasonal migration impacts on Mexican migrants, their families and their communities, taking in aspects such as cultural identity, eating habits and family health, organization and communication. To this end, they conducted interviews with migrants and their families (for the most part their spouses and offspring) in six southern municipalities in the State of Guanajuato, which has a history of migration dating back to 1890. Going beyond mere facts and figures, the story of migratory flows is told through the individuals and their families who bear the risks and suffer the painful separations and collateral damage. Giving voice to these people in order to better understand the consequences of this phenomenon, in their own words, is one of the key achievements of the work that went into the analysis presented in this volume, for it is they who best know the reality of their situations and who are best placed to tell the tale.
