Description
On why thinking is overrated.
Few things scare us more than inner emptiness. Yet inner emptiness can also be productive and useful. We can reach this state through meditation, concentration, music or even during sex - our brain loves the emptiness, it makes us happy. No more self-awareness. Even the words disappear: One does not read, one does not speak, and even the train of thought seems to come to a halt. A frightening idea. The presumed emptiness of coma and locked-in scares us so much that we even sign living wills, so we will not experience these states. But this negative take on emptiness can be countered by a positive one: Our brain is far more than just a centre of thought. It is an organ that likes being thoughtless. The latest brain research provides further evidence supporting the pleasure in emptiness and shows how we can take advantage of it – especially in a world that expects us to be constantly active.
